Is the name on the front right I thought the one on gate duty at RAF Lyneham was Canopus,

Sorry it was my sense of humour . How's your Latin.
The Comets were all named after stars. In this case the star Canopus, also called the Dog Star, because in Latin canopus means DOG.
(That's where the Canary Islands get their name as the island was overun with dogs when discovered)
Canopus Lupus is in fact the WOLF , But literally translates to 'running dog'. This Comet doesn't fly but does run

I think the translation's open to discussion but I'd say it's nearer to Wolf eating the affected part, like a form of corrosion.
