Some old photographs from Birmingham in the 80s

Post by Tapdanceknifethrower » Sun Mar 26, 2023 9:53 am

Hi again

Some more nostalgic pictures this time from Birmingham International (BHX) taken at various times in the late 80s

ImageMonarch Airlines 737 G-BMON by Craig S Martin, on Flickr

Monarch Airlines Boeing 737-2K9 G-BMON taxiing in at Birmingham International. The picture was taken in the days when you could get right up to the fence by the outdoor viewing/picnic area.

Orion Airways Airbus A300B4-203 G-BMZK at Birmingham. At the time this was new to Orion so it must be from 1987. Taken from the now-defunct viewing gallery at Birmingham International.

Aeroflot Tupolev Tu-154B-2 CCCP-85390 at Birmingham International. This aircraft was scrapped around 2007.

Worldways Canada DC-8-63 C-FCPQ at Birmingham.

All were scanned from photographs.

I hope you like these

Regards
Craig

Some wonderful shots there, not least the Worldways DC-8. BHX had some excellent photography spots in the 1980s.

Great pics, thanks for posting. For some reason they made me reflect on how simpler life seemed to be in those days!

Thanks, DavieB

The Monarch 737 was taken as mentioned from the fence by the picnic/outdoor viewing area that Birmingham International used to have. In the late 80s early 90s, it was possible to get some very interesting pictures from this area. You might have noticed I appear to be below the subject this was because there was a ditch in front of the fence which you could stand in, I'm 6 foot 1 inch tall BTW, and take pictures like this of aircraft taxiing in or out. The atmosphere was very relaxed then and I never had a problem taking pictures like this, although I did have a policeman try to arrest me at Stansted in 1990 because of the ex-East Germany military hat I was wearing but that's a different story as they say.
