SPOTM August 2018 De Havilland

Post by andygolfer » Fri Aug 10, 2018 8:53 pm

This is the SPOTM (Special Photo Of The Month) competition for August 2018 and the subject is ‘De Havilland' (but excluding De Havilland Canada aircraft - so no Chipmunks I'm afraid, (we will save DHC for another day - sorry Month!)

The subject of your entry should be a photo of one or more civil registered De Havilland designed aircraft: airliner, general aviation, executive or preserved ex military with a civilian registration. It can also be a type which was later built by another company which took over/ absorbed De Havilland such as Hawker Siddely so the good old gripper aka Trident is even acceptable! now there's a nice wide subject for you this month - I'm just wondering what forgotten types might come out of the woodwork for this one!

Photography Competition Rules :-

1. Only one entry per user, unless posting on behalf of another person who is unable to do so themselves (children for example). If this is the case, please state so on your entry..

2. The photo may have been taken on any date, it does not have to be taken in the month of the competition

3. The image can be photo-shopped to some extent, levels changes, cropping, sharpening etc. are all acceptable. The photograph must retain it’s initial subject though, don’t make it something it’s not. HDR images are not acceptable. If you are unsure, please PM a moderator.

4. The competition will remain open until 23.59 (UK time) on the 2nd September 2018 - please note new extended closing date to enable anyone with a last minute entry some breathing space.

5. Voting will be conducted by a poll open to all the membership shortly after the closure of the competition.

6. 'Rule 6...' There's no rule 6 Bruce'

7. The decision of the moderating team is final.

8. All images must be posted in line with the usual CA posting rules (size etc.), please read them if you're not sure how to post.

9. The rules may be subject to change, and these will be posted on this thread.

10. Please also embed the images and not links to images, if you're not sure how to do it then shout up and someone will sort it out. It is permissible to change your entry before the closing date.

11. Do not comment on other member's photos.

12. A brief description of where and when the image was taken would be nice too.

If you have any questions please PM me

Good luck everyone.
Andrew

Here's my entry, DH.60 Moth G-EBWD taken at the Old Warden evening display in May this year. what a place it is and so many de Havilland aircraft in the collection (I could have used another Dh.88 pic this month but I expect you've seen enough of that!). This one looked lovely in the evening light....

good luck everybody, lets see lots of entries - DH designed all sorts over many years, airliners, g.a. and there are lots of preserved military types so lots to choose from - you must have one somewhere ;) .

My entry goes back a few years, to the once world renowned Strathallan Collection.

DH82A Tiger Moth G-ANFV (DF155) flown by Bernie Sedgwick, then a BCal BAC-111 captain.

The photo was taken on a Kodak Pocket Instamatic (small 110 film), in August 1980 and scanned from a 5" x 3.5" pre-digital print.

DH106 Comet Dan-Air at Gatwick. About the early 80's.

Used to sit on the wooden fence at the side of the A23 between the terminal and the Beehive. Memories.

Pete.

My entry for this month, and a subject already used this month.

ImageDF155 - deHavilland DH82A Tiger Moth by Alan Paterson, on Flickr

DF155 which was then based at Shempston, next to RAF Lossiemouth, and was being used for static display at a Family & Friends day at Lossie sometime in the early 1990s.

Sadly this aircraft crashed on landing at Shempston on 12 Aug 2012 and written off as Beyond Economical Repair. The link below provide further information.

G-AVFH HS121 Trident Two of British Airways at Heathrow on 29 July 1978 - together with two other Tridents in the heat haze in the background.
(Originally the De Havilland 121-The Trident was the first T tail rear-engined three engined jet airliner to be designed. It was also the first airliner to make a blind landing in revenue service, in 1965).
