Oleg's Cub

Post by Grass73 » Sun Jan 31, 2016 10:23 pm

Looking through my flickr page for suitable "smoking shots" I came across some An-12s shots so I decided to start a thread looking a back at the Soviet workhorse.

All shots are scanned from Fujichrome slide film.

Sharjah (SHJ), 5 March 2000,

3) RA-11301, Antonov An-12, of Presidential Airlines, under going maintenance. The enlarged tailcone identifies this machine as an AN-12PP - an ECM variant of the Cub.

I've really enjoyed Niall's collection of Cub pictures - sunshine and four engined propliners - and I really can't contribute on the same level. Actually, looking at my log I've only ever seen 5 of them with several being Czech AF machines at various IAT airshows. I do recall the regular Yugoslav AF Cub in to Heathrow and also seeing a Balkan one at Gatwick. My only civvie photos of a cub are a former Aeroflot example at the RAF Lyneham families day in 1994. I recall its very shallow climb out - effectively horizontal relying on the curvature of the earth it appeared.

Great to see these shots from Lyneham, this particular An-12 was semi based at Manston at the time and brings back great memories. The other An-12 shots are great too.

Thanks for sharing
