Re: 9 mins at SEN in the 70's
that's brilliant Bob, so many memories of Southend and the old terminal- even an RAC desk!
Seeing that,I can remember the cafe and the newspaper shop where I would buy aviation magazines etc. Then round the corner, up the stairs to the viewing area. I had relations at Southend that we visited regularly and I usually got my father to drop me at the airport for the afternoon so I was there quite regularly.
I wonder what the elf n'safety mob would think of that loading procedure nowadays? nothing to stop falls etc. I only flew on a Carvair once (well twice including the return) Southend to Rotterdam in about 1971 me and my friend (who ended up being my best man twice!) took our bikes to Holland and did a 10 day plane spotting tour, watching the bikes being loaded was amusing for everybody waiting and those up in the viewing area we were told by parents afterwards - the ground handlers cycling across the tarmac on our heavily laden bikes! It is so much easier to get around these days! I used to go many miles on my bike in my youth, planespotting around the south east.
I'm trying to work out the year for that and I reckon it's about 1975 ish , can't remember when BMA got their Viscounts but I flew on one in '77 from southend on my first honeymoon to Jersey. On the way back I went up on the flight deck (it was a common thing in those days, shame that times have changed) and was asked if I wanted to stay there for the rest of the flight so nipped back for my camera (brief explanantion to my new wife - that got me off to a bad start!) and stayed right until we stopped on the pan! I must find those slides and scan them. The Capri is a K plate which I think was 1971 so at least it's after then.
I can't remember who's the DC.3s were, any offers? and looks like 1/2 a fuselage on the far side of the airport in one shot, I vaguely remember something there but another one that has beaten me.
Great nostalgia and thanks for finding and posting it Bob. A great start to the day.
