Cyprus Holiday 25th August to 4th September 2019

Post by Bobbybefc » Thu Sep 05, 2019 1:40 pm

:D

Have just returned from a 10 day holiday- mainly non spotting to attend my nieces wedding at the Olympic Lagoon Hotel- at Ayia Napa in Cyprus. I say a non spotting holiday- but managed to sneak in between the festivities- and the drinking and eating and sunbathing an half decent log.

Like our Lanzarote holiday we used TUI for our flights- G-OBYH 767- on the outbound- and G-FDZS 737-8 on our return yesterday - both were smooth flights- with very little turbulence. Seen on the trip- were the following mostly eastern European countries- the majority which made their approaches into Larnaca right in front of our hotel. Russian and Ukrainian aircraft were flavour of the day, with quite a few- Aeroflot, Pobeda, S7, Rossiya and Ural being seen.

Overflights were very difficult to see almost impossible until the early evening when heat haze burned off- then a few hit the book's. Anyway seen of interest were the following the majority being cops:-

Managed a grand total of 80 out of that lot- would have been more but for the heat haze- can't complain though.

Great log Bob, it's incredible how many Russian aircraft you saw and changed days to when I last went to Cyprus 20+ years ago!

I think you mean a 10 day holiday though, 10 weeks is wishful thinking. :)

You beat me to it Mike- should have been 10 day's -would like to go for ten weeks but my wallet would not allow that long. Cyprus is great especially Larnaca- where 60% of the inbounds I would say are Russian, Ukrainian etc. Well worth a trip- more than likely heading that way again in 2020 this time to Paphos.

Mistake amended.

Happy Days

That's an interesting log Bob with quite a few Chinese airlines and the inevitable Russians. Larnaca airport certainly seems to have developed from when I was last there in the '80's and early '90s. In those days it was a bolt hole and safe haven for many Middle East airlines that couldn't use Beirut and they would be mixed with Israeli aircraft and some eastern block flights that used Larnaca to refuel enroute 'spy on the British bases'. Mackenzie Beach at Larnaca was a great location for spotting but not so good for photography as it was in to sun most of the day.

Thanks Neil- The Hainan were OTT each morning inbound Tel Aviv- as were the Aeroflot 777's - the majority of the rest were inbound Larnaca. The EU countries inbounds usually approached from the Paphos end of the island and turned in over the bay. So was unable to see them. But noticed a few hotels on the beach whilst landing- and the wife said- "Bet you would like to stay there".

Happy days
