Turweston EGBT airfield guide

Post by andygolfer » Mon Jun 15, 2015 5:37 pm

Address: Turweston Aerodrome. Biddlesden Road, Westbury, Brackley NN13 5YD

Turweston airfield is located approximately 2 miles east of Brackley between the A43 and A422. It is approximately 8 miles from junction 10 on the M40 and 10 miles from junction 11. It is signposted from the A422 at Westbury and from the A43 at Whitfield.
SatNav OX7 4NS should take you to the flying club entrance

The nearest bus service is to Turweston village (131 & 132) but from there the shortest walk is about 1 ¼ miles via public footpaths (see the OS map)

Once at the airfield follow the southern perimeter track round to the hangars. Since I visited in 2015 the new control tower and cafe etc has opened as indicated on the revised plan below, there is a car park (also indicated) next to it. The new control tower and club house is located behind the Mark Allen hangar.

ICAO code EGBT
contact radio frequency (air/ground): 122.175

The airfield has a tarmac main runway 09/27, 1000 meters long with a parallel grass strip on the south side

Spotting / photography
The first stop when visiting is the control tower / clubhouse where you should ask for permission to look round, they are very friendly and I was allowed access onto the aircraft areas during my visit and was told I could go into the open club hangars and most importantly remember the golden rule –‘ don’t touch anything’.
The Chiltern Classic hangar was also open and a request to walk in to take a couple of photos was granted. The Heli-charter hangar was open when I drove in but closed by the time I walked round so I didn’t find out how they re-act to requests. I am told that Akki do not normally grant access.
I was asked to call back at the club house before leaving so that they knew I was no longer on site, and of course I took the time to say ‘thank you’. By doing this you will help maintain access for future visiting enthusiasts
There were 40 or so aircraft present during my visit plus any which were in the close hangars (Mick Allen & Akki). The busiest time at Turweston is in July on the weekend of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone about 4 miles away, there are intensive helicopter shuttles to the race circuit and fixed wing movements either to connect with the helicopters or the road shuttles. There’s a link to a youtube video on the Silverstone page of the website showing the activity during the grand prix weekend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BnIVBs8-34

There is now a very new & shiny control tower incorporating a cafe & viewing area. The entrance is behind the Classic hangar where there is a nice new car park too.
Still friendly and best to visit during Silverstone week or when there is a fly-in happening. Last Saturday I logged 123 frames (based + VAC Fly-in) but had to leave by 13:00 so missed many others coming in later.

Just be polite, ask for entry, show interest and don't touch anything unless you have permission.

thanks for that info, the construction was in progress when I visited. It looks very plush on the photos!
I have revised the plan to show it's location and car park and revised the text so that it is up to date.

I'm going through all my info from my trip along the M.40 corridor in 2015 as I'm doing a talk about it and the airfields I visited to the Stansted branch of Air-Britain in May so a good time to get it up to date!

The Air-Britain fly in is also being held at Turweston on 22nd and 23rd June this year after many years at North Weald.

Hi chaps and chapesses,

Quick update re-Turweston:

A new hangar has been built and is in the process of being completed opposite the tower on the old runway. This will be the new base for AKKI. As I understand it will not be accessible for spotters. The area between it and the 09 end of the runway will be airside and no access to this area will be granted.
What was the Cotswold hangar, is now partly occupied by the Midland Aeroplane Company and are potentially due to move into what will be the old AKKI building.
Heli-charter hangar is now AS Aerospace and absolutely NO access is permitted to it, or photography within it and we ask that, if the doors are open for any reason that this is respected regardless. Anything noted in this hangar is also NOT to be reported anywhere.

We continue to welcome spotters/enthusiasts/photographers. Just ask who ever is on the ramp (usually with the bowser) and chuck some coins (or notes!) into the Air Ambulance pot. However, last year especially, we had instances of folks just walking into hangars, and strolling around without asking, as if they owned the place. If such behaviour continues then obviously it will spoil it for others as restrictions will be put in place, something we want to avoid but then if people force our hand...
In a couple of months at the end of last year, between lockdowns, we managed £150 for the air ambulance, and a further £200 in the fortnight that would normally have been Grand Prix weekend, thanks to the enthusiast community.
