Stansted aerozone access

Following my (and others') posting of photos taken from the Aerozone I've been asked if I can write a bit of information about gaining access and the facilities so here goes....

The Aerozone is an education facility on the south side of Stansted airport on Long Border road just east of the Ryanair hangar. It is not open to the public but the police open it once a month normally first Saturday morning of the month (and occasionally on extra dates) for members of the planewatch scheme and their pre-registered guests to use for spotting and photography. They do not allow unaccompanied non members i.e. people who have not been security vetted by the police as the area is regarded as a sensitive security area for airport operations. Following several unauthorised incursions last year they now patrol there regularly when there is not scheme sessions in progress.

They charge £10 for the morning and provide free tea & coffee (and sometimes biscuits too). There is parking within the Aerozone compound and a hard surfaced viewing area close to the taxiways and with good views of the runway and northside business park. The sessions usually run from 9am to 1pm.

Here's a link to details of the scheme which is free to join: http://www.civilianaviation.co.uk/forum ... 37&t=19132

I and other planewatch members (one of whom is a regular on here) have been working closely with the police and Manchester Airports Group to try to improve facilities and we have already secured an extra date for April this year which should see some interesting movements, we tried to get it opened to the public as well to demonstrate the benefits of a public viewing area on the south side but unfortunately the authorities did not want un-vetted people there so on this occasion we were only partly successful, there is probably still time to get a membership in and approved by then though ;)

hope this is useful and answers a few questions
Andy
