Which hotel to use at Heathrow?

Post by The Cameraman » Sun Nov 21, 2010 1:49 pm

Good Afternoon Chaps n Chapesses,

in a week or so it's possible that a mate and myself could be heading down to Heathrow for two days spotting. If we decide to go then we'd be looking for a reasonably priced local hotel.

So for you regulars that do such things, which hotel would you recommend?

Considering the weather my be a bit iffy, it would be nice to be able to view directly from the room.

Previously I've stayed at the Ibis (no view) the Ariel Park (a few rooms have a reasonable view) and the Renaissance (great view but not cheap).

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Regards

Reggie

Hi Reggie
This may help.

Image

1, Heathrow Park , 0208 759 2400

2, Sheraton , 0208 759 2424

3 , Arora , 0208 759 7777

4, Holiday Inn , 0208 990 0000

5, Le Meridien , 0208 759 6611

6, Renaissance , 0208 897 6363

8, Radission , 0208 759 6311

9, Marriot , 0202 990 1100

10, Sheraton Skyline , 0208 759 2535

11, Ariel , 0870 400 9040

12, Ibis , 0208 759 7755

13, Travel Inn , 0870 607 5075

14, Hilton , 0208 759 7755

15, Colnbrook Lodge B & B , 01753 681600

16, Sofitel 0208 757 7777

Onviously as I live local I haven't stayed at any of these hotels, but for rooms with a view my guesses would be.
1 , Renaissance (6)
2 , Travel Inn (13) , views MAY be blocked by multi storey car park.
3 , Arora , (3) , views MAY be blocked by office block.
4 , Sofitel (16) , Probably good for 9L landings only.
5 , Colnbrook Lodge (15), bit far away from 9L runway end.

All being very close to the airport they are all far from cheap, there are a few places a bit further out, but depends what/where.
H.T.H. If you are coming down p.m. me and I'll p.m. you my mobile & we can meet-up for a coffee.
Have fun

Hi Terry,

ta for the details.

As soon as my mate's made a decision I'll let you know and it would be superb to meet up for a brew/pint (delete as appropriate).

Reggie, heard good reports about the Renaissance as they do a special weekender for spotters with upstairs rooms overlooking the hole airport. Only down side is if your photographing you can't open the windows.http://www.marriott.co.uk/hotels/hotel- ... row-hotel/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Scroll down about halfway. Never done this myself But looks a good spot.

Jurys Inn at Hatton Cross also has some rooms with views over BA maintenance, 27R arrivals and departures (but 27L is the other side of the building)... It can be quite well priced at times too and for photographers has the advantage of an easy walk to Myrtle Avenue if the weather is good.

(13) is a Premier Inn, not a Travel Inn :) Views used to be great before they built that sodding Q-Park :( Hopefully I'll find out if a couple of weeks if there's still any views!

Don't forget the Travelodge at "Terminal 5" - It's the other side of the M25, but if you get a room on the top floor at the far end, you can see 09 arrivals and 27 departures. Photographs of 09L arrivals are just about possible with a 400mm from the car park.

Hi Flaps
Its almost what it says on the tin :) A multi storey car park . I think its just 4 floors.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ie=UTF8&l ... 3&t=h&z=17" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Its the framework/building next to where the name Northern Perimeter Rd is.

Skymonster,
I had completely forgotten about the Jury's Inn, drive past it most days & don't see it  .

Chris
Never occured to me the Travel Lodge at Colnbrook would be any good for pics, not that I know how to get in it

Have fun

Terry is exactly right, and you'll see the problem from this Streetview shot;
Image

As for how to get in to the Travelodge, across the M25, in to the Industrial Estate, try not to get hit by any 40ft's and in to the hotel at the end :) Simples! ;)

Cheers chaps, the Q-Park building shouldn't cause much of problem at the Premier Inn by the looks of it,I've stayed there loads of times but is only good for shots if they're landing on 27R and even then it's South-facing !

Hi Chaps,

I really appreciate your comments, so thank you. My mate lost his job, somewhat unexpected, so we postponed the trip.

Still there's next season to consider.

regards

Reggie
