Spotting at LGW

Post by Radleigh » Fri Dec 16, 2011 1:13 pm

Hi, I'm after knowing what it is like to spot now at Gatwick, I haven't been for years (possibly 7/8 years) as I don't collect registrations now, just photos. I'm after photo's of the An-148 and IL-96's that go in. Are there any good spots? I remember going to a crash gate when my dad used to take us that looked onto the runway, but thats as good as my memory gets..

Thanks inadvance!

There is a place by a stream near the 08 end of the runway, next to the taxiway. It is about a 30-40 minute walk to get there. To get there park along Povey Cross road. Go along one of the footpaths through the trees and you will find a river. Follow it south and cross over it using the stepping stones some way down. Keep heading south and you will get a view of the 08 runway and taxiways nearby. There is a mound so you can get photos without the fence covering the aircraft. Although, there are no views of the terminal or stands and I have heard the river can be uncrossable after a rainy period. I have only been there once, when runway 08 was in use, and got some good pictures. Cannot say what it is like when 26 is in use.

Here are some links of videos/photos from this location (only last link is my vid!)

You can park in the long lay-by in Charlwood road then walk back to the end of runway 08 to get landing shots or to the crash gate you mentioned for taxing shots only really of any use with Easterly winds. See enclosed pic.
