Hi guys, im looking at the Canon 55-250 IS and the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM. Whats the main benefits of the larger lens bar the extra distance? quality wise.

cheers
Ben

Hi

They're both excellent lenses and,to some extent, the wider 55mm of the one is more useful than the extra 50mm at the other end, because you can crop on computer but can't squeeze something too large in in the first place.
They're both in the budget end of the range(s) but the 55-250 is largely plastic construction and lightweight, whereas the considerably more costly 70-300IS is of much more robust and heavier construction. Both are optically rather good in this price bracket.

Hi Ben

I use the Canon EF70-300mm F4-5.6 IS USM that you mention in your post. It is a very good lens & an excellent starting point for a telephoto lens. The second lens that you mention is to my knowledge 2 models below this & results follow accordingly. Here's a couple of my shots with the lens to let you in see it "in action". Theres a load more on my flickr account :)

The one point I would make about this lens is that it suffers in the last 50mm, but then again any lens at this price-point will do the same!

Anything else I can help about let me know :) Don't forget that the camera is only as good as the lens that's on the front of it!

Tar Stephen,
I would have preferred the Canon 70-300 but the budget will only stretch so far. I'll see how I get on with the sigma and well see. I'm off down London way for Obamas departure on the 26th so I'll upload a few as well as some on FC as well

Hi Ben

I know exactly the feeling! I managed to get a good deal on my lens, otherwise it would also have been out of my price range :) I'll look forward to seeing your pictures!

Cheers :)

Well don't be expecting too much, I'll have only had the camera 3 days before I set off. Either way, wish me luck.

Nah I can't blame you, that's a good price and id have done the same, if the circumstances had been swapped :) I can't complain, I was happywith £110.
