Canon announce 4 new DSLRs - but I went for the 70D

Post by andygolfer » Fri Feb 06, 2015 7:50 am

I received a marketing e-mail from Wex this morning (other outlets are available) re 4 new Canon DSLRs, rather a long link I'm afraid:
http://view.email.wex.co.uk/?j=fe951678 ... rowser&r=0

the 5DS and 5DSR have 50 Mp sensors ( but are £3k plus) - quite a development in sensors.

much more modest are the 750D and 760D at around £600 - 650 and a 24mp sensor.

I was planning to replace my 2nd body (my original 1000D) this summer and was looking at the 70D, now I need to go through the reviews again and I guess waiting until a few of these have been tested in the field might be a good plan. On first reading both the 750 and 760 look like a good option for my range of budget ( there's no way I could justify £3k on a hobby).

I know your conundrum Andy...

I have been thinking about getting a 2nd body to replace my 600d, and was thinking of the 70d - however the 760d looks very similar in terms of spec, and the price is a lot more appealing as well!!

RRP of £649 - so hopefully will be a little lower than that, or bring the price of the 70d down a little...

has anybody used a 70D? I keep thinking about getting one rather than the 7D as I still want to replace my old 2nd body (1000D) with something better - I also have a 600D at present which is the one I mainly use but I like 2 cameras at airshows etc. one with my Canon 100-400 and the other with my Sigma 18-250 for ground / static shots.

price on both seems to be coming down a bit now so thinking of biting the bullet at last.

Not used one, but heard good things about the 70d - some saying that it is better than the 7d mk1. It is the camera body that I would (Will) be getting if and when funds allow...

Also, on a side note, there is a recognized problem with the 750 / 760d developing white spots on the sensor. Canon are working on a resolution, which will see cameras either being swapped, or having the sensors replaced.

thanks Dan,
I ruled out the 750D as I felt the 70D spec was far better for what I wanted.
My only doubt is how I would get on with the touch screen.

I'm a big fan of the EOS xxD series having owned a few over the years, and I would love to upgrade to a 70D. Everything I've read about it is very positive. It has the 7D MkI AF system which is awesome, with newer sensor technology etc. I wouldn't worry about the touchscreen Andy, you don't have to use it. It has all the 'traditional' buttons found on the xxD series (which will be a bit different from what you're used to on an xxxD series body but are more intuitive and slicker to use). Personally I wouldn't use the touchscreen at all - I'm very comfortable with the buttons and I don't want fingerprints on the screen!

I met a guy at Duxford today who had one and he said it was excellent, showed me the touchscreen etc and the general working. He said the results were really impressive and recommended that I get one! It's very re-assuring to find somebody who's actually using one and hear their thoughts on the camera.

I'm convinced so just got to convince the wife now (or do a Dan and hide it  )

The easy part is done then Andy (You've convinced yourself!)

Good luck with the more difficult part - or is that what the decorating is for??

Well Dan, thanks to your advice re HDEW I now have an EOS70D. Excellent service, and I'm delighted.
I ordered it on Monday evening after their open hours so they didn't start the order processing until Tuesday morning although I received an immediate acknowledgement e-mail Monday evening with the order number.
On Tuesday morning I received another e-mail saying the order was being processed ready for dispatch which normally takes 3 to 5 working days.
Yesterday afternoon, less than 48 hours after placing the order I received another e-mail saying order was now dispatched with tracking info (it was sent via FedEx) and the camera arrived around 4.30 this afternoon. Now that's what I call good service! :)
On top of that the price was the lowest around apart from a couple of what seemed to be dodgy outlets when I researched them so all in all I think this was an excellent deal. :)
I ordered the 70D body plus the 18-55 lens as that was only £50 more and it might be handy at times and I was expecting that it might arrive in a plain box having heard they sometimes split the canon sets to fulfil orders but I'm pleased to say it was all in the original Canon box. :)

all I need to do now is work out how to use it before duxford VE show at the weekend ;)

thanks again Dan , and HDEW!

Andy, if the 18-55 is the IS version then don't under rate it. I know many people dismiss kit lenses as rubbish but I acquired an IS version some time ago. I have used it hand held at 1/4 second expecting maybe an odd keeper and was amazed to find most were keepers!

Thanks for the comment. I certainly didn't underrate it, I already have the earlier version which came with my 600D and it is an excellent lens which I use occasionally when taking 2 cameras out but not with my 100-400 on one of them (most commonly when I'm going abroad as the 100-400 is a bit big for that). My 18-250 Sigma is an excellent all round lens though so the 18-55 doesn't get a lot of use. I also have an non IS 18-55 which came with my old 1000D, my original DSLR bought back in 2010, still a good lens but I will put one of the IS lenses on that now for my step-daughter to use as I will pass that on to her to save her borrowing mine :)

Finally re kit lenses, i agree they are good value, I had a 70-300 (non IS) with my 1000D and it took 1000's of excellent pics before I got the 100-400, that got passed on to my Italian son in law after my daughter (with a bit of help from me) bought him a 600D for Xmas 2 years ago and it's still going strong.
