Which Lens?
Which Lens?
I have a canon 550D with only the standard 18-55mm lens which ive been doing well with considering. im now after something with a lot more zoom my choices are the 70-300m f4-5.6 ef which retails around £250 or spend more and get the 70-200mm f4.0 L series which retails about £450. now with my camera being a budget camera will i notice a big difference between the 2 lenses? or will i need a much better camera to make it worth using the L series lens?

Re: Which Lens?
The 70-200L is a fantastic lens for the money & you can always save for the 1.4 converter if you need more reach. Its very light weight & the quality is superb. It will work fine on your 550D. I had one & sold it to upgrade but wouldn't hesitate to get another.
Re: Which Lens?
im also thinking about the 70-300mm L series now? its between that and the 70-200

Re: Which Lens?
Go for the 70-300.
I use a 70-300 on my Nikon and it is great for aircraft photography.

Re: Which Lens?
Chris, i swopped my 70-200L for the 70-300L & its a fantstic lens but much heavier. Its built like a tank, very solid & its sharp all the way through. It is very expensive but i dont regret swopping. Its IS works great in low light.
Re: Which Lens?
the 70-300 it is then :p. thank you

Re: Which Lens?
ok so i bought the 70-300L IS USM and i love it! but now im wishing i had more distance! so stick with the 70-300 or go the 100-400? ive heard the quality and sharpness is less in the 100-400 and obviously you cant go any lower than 100mm but you get the extra 100mm and can be used with the 1.4 extender! grrrr im so torn between the 2

Re: Which Lens?
Most have said the usual choices, but happy to drop another into the mix. Have a look at the Sigma 120-300 EX 2.8. Great lens. Will happily take a 1.4x converter extending it to 420mm at f4.0. There are two versions one with IS, the other (older model) without. Mine lives most of the time on a monopod (it's a heavy beast) so don't need the IS.
Re: Which Lens?
You wont really notice the difference between 300mm and 400mm IMO, If you are really wanting extra distance get the Sigma 150-500.. you won't regret it!
Re: Which Lens?
The Sigma 50-500 has better optics, the 150-500 is a great lens (I borrowed one recently) but have been told to get the 50-500, plus you have that bit of extra width for the larger aircraft if you need it.
If you are worried about sharpness, this is almost straight out the camera with the 150-500, with very minimal sharpening. 313mm taken at 1/80th, you really won't regret it!

Re: Which Lens?
I have the 550d and the sigma 150-500mm its an awesome setup and was told that yes the 50-500mm give you the a wide start but you have better quality at 500mm on the 150 due to less glass/elements inside so there less chance of reflections and quality loss etc.
