Photo editing software

Recently had my PC trashed by hackers, dont ask - I feel very silly and embarrassed about it. My local computer specialists managed to restore the PC to as-new state, i.e. with just the Windows OS. So I lost my Photoshop version which came with the PC ( a Dell), So my question is this - are there any reasonable free software packages (I use Irfanview to reduce the picture size before posting on t'internet) which people would recommend, or failing that which packages that require buying come recommended? I am looking to get stuck into scanning my old slides and negatives so need colour and contrast correction which I dont find Irfanview very good at.
Thanks for any help.

Ian - sorry to hear about your problem.

Porkscratching (Nick)told me about paint.net recently, that is a free one and I now have that on my laptop (I was having my pc re-built so wanted a programme to use in the interim).

It takes a while to get used to (especially when you're getting on a bit like me  ) but that's probably the case with most of these programmes. I've managed some good results with it but haven't used it for a month or more so expect I will be starting from scratch again when I do get the laptop out.

There are probably others out there as well, but at least I've given you one as a starter.

HTH

The free one I use is PhotoScape, and it does a really good job.

Good luck with whichever one you choose.

I'm signed up with the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, so use Photoshop and mainly Lightroom... Appreciate that isn't to everyones cup of tea!

Another one of the free ones that I have used is Picassa,by Google. It provides some basic editing, and is pretty good for a free app. Again though, this isn't to everyones taste...
