backing up photos whilst on holiday - best way?

Post by andygolfer » Wed Aug 27, 2014 12:07 pm

I'm off the USA in about a month and obviously will be taking my camera with me and hopefully getting lots of nice photos. Now i'm a pessimist and know that if I don't back up my photos almost daily something will go wrong and I will lose them all!

So - before I go I shall stock up on a few more SD cards so that all my pics aren't on just one or two BUT does anybody know of an easily portable device on which i can back up my pics every day or so. I won't delete them from the cards until I'm safely home but I just want the peace of mind of having them backed up separately as I go and I don't want to cart my laptop around with me let alone take it to the USA in the first place! I have thought of UBS memory sticks but I still have to find somwewhere to download to them.

any advice most welcome, thanks.

Hi Andy,

I would personally recommend backing up your SD cards on a daily basis and thereby having two digital copies to rely upon. Other than a CF card becoming corrupt, which is quite rare these days, there is a slim chance of luggage being lost in transit etc. Thereby, keeping your SD cards and back-up in separate pieces of baggage, hand and hold luggage, makes sense.

I used to use a small and very handy back-up device that had ports for all common memory card types. If i recall it had about a 40GB memory and could be charged via a USB connection, car lighter etc. I gave it to my brother some years ago and haven't needed a replacement since. Browsing sites like WEX and MyMemory it appears that such devices aren't produced in the variety they were (maybe folk back up to notebooks etc. when on travels). However, Amazon has a number of devices similar to the one I used to have:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ex-Pro%C2%AE-Pi ... W5YSNF0T5B

or a delux model with a small screen to browse your pics

http://www.amazon.co.uk/HyperDrive-Colo ... CSHRW1SBY7

I can't vouch for either of these specifically but the concept of backing-up to such a device I strongly recommend (belts and braces).

Would be most interested to hear further from you of your experiences of using such a device on your travels if you do get one.

All the best and have a great trip

Neil

I went travelling for 4 months and never once backed up any photos while I was away, however I was on edge most days thinking 'what if my card goes corrupt..' so I would suggest taking someone like above.

or,If you have access to the internet? You could always dump the JPEGs on there too. Make a new Flickr account, set it to private so no one can see then upload all off the card...?

Thanks guys, am rading up on them. The Ex-Pro does what I want but there are a couple of bad reviews so trying to find some more before I decide.
