Concorde - 15 years after the final flight

Post by andygolfer » Sun Nov 25, 2018 4:01 pm

it was 15 years tomorrow that Concorde G-BOAF made the final Concorde flight from Heathrow to Filton returning to where it was built and ending the era of the SST (for the foreseeable future anyway), it's gone quickly but let's look back at it so here are a few of my Concorde pics and what can you contribute? Let's see how many we ca load photos of by midnight tomorrow!

Here are some of mine of ''Foxie' in her current home, the Bristol Aerospace museum...

and a long time ago 'AF' at Stansted July 1985:
Imageconcorde stn july 1985, 2 by Andrew Goldsmith, on Flickr

meanwhile 15 years on G-BOAB is still at Heathrow:
this one taken in 2012:

and some others (I'm surprised how few I have)
landing at Heathrow 15-07-1991, zooming in the underwing reg, I'm fairly sure is G-BOAA
ImageLHR 15-7-1991 Concorde British Aiirways landing 28R by Andrew Goldsmith, on Flickr

and the day it was taken into the extended hangar for permanent indoor exhibition, 3rd May 2006

G-BBDG, used for development work between 1974 and 1981, it was purchased by British Airways but never put into service and was used as a spares source. In 2003 it was offered to the Brooklands museum and it was dismantled for transprt and then re-assembled for display and wasopened to the public in 2006, these were taken at Brooklands in March 2012 when my family gave me a 60th birthday present of flying the Concorde simulator at hte same museum!

and a French one, F-BVFA of Air France at the Udvar-Hazy museum, Washington DC taken in 2014
Image7905 concorde F-BVFA by Andrew Goldsmith, on Flickr

that's all I can find at present, somewhere I've got a very poor quality slide of Concorde prototype 001, G-BSST in formation with 16 Lightnings for the Queens birthday flypast in 1969, that will take some searching out though.

so, Who's next? (and what a classic album that was? I still play it regularly)

I also only have a few Concorde photos but virtually all rubbish ones which aren't even good enough for this type of thread. Andy has already put up some decent shots of Duxford's G-AXDN so just one different frame from me - F-BTSD on display at Parish Air Show in 2003. This is the same one that appeared at the Finningley BoB show in 1985.

I don't have many Concorde photos but I saw all 20 that were built (and every VC10 :P ) , here's a couple of G-BOAB at Heathrow (I'll add some more when I find them!)

A varied selection from me. Having seen all 20 Concordes built I've not managed to photograph them all.

My Father-In-Law has a cracking photo of G-BSST on its first roll out from the Brabazon Hangar at Filton, he climbed the embankment and got a colour picture looking down on it. I will see if I can borrow and scan it at some point.

Some really interesting shots in this thread, e.g. the flying shots of the prototype and pre-production a/c, and the SIA livery.

I have no idea of the origins of this photo, inherited from my late father in law, hanging on a wall for years !!
There are others from my collection to follow ...

superb photo Keith, I wonder if that was the final landings in Oct. 2003 as they appear to have a red carpet for the arriving passengers at the bottom of the photo.

Can't wait to see the others!

thanks for posting it

Keith (and all), I posted a link to this topic on www.concordesst.com and asked if anybody could give more detail about Keith's photo, 2 posts above this one.
I got a reply in a matter of hours from somebody who knew a lot about it as follows

This was 24th October 2003 - the final day.
Aircraft at the front left (with Rec Carpet) was G-BOAG arrived on the last BA002 from JFK - to the right is G-BOAC which flew in from Cardiff the day before.
At the rear is G-BOAE and G-BOAF which had operated from Edinburgh and 'Round the Bay' and in the hangar is G-BOAD which was the standby aircraft that day but was never needed.

thanks to James on that group.

So with the one in the hangar that's all 5 active aircraft in the photo. very nice

50 years today F-WSST made the maiden Concorde flight, just seems amazing how fast time (and Concorde) flies or flew.

it still looks so modern and ahead of the airliners flying today, and 50 years on there's nothing in the pipeline to match it. I was so lucky to see it regularly at Heathrow and rather foolishly took it for granted and have very few photos to remind me of it.

I hope G-BOAB finds a new home! It's really sad to think it's sitting in a corner at Heathrow - Lonely and alone.

I think the idea is that AB stays at Heathrow - because it's BA's home, and so many Concorde flights operated from there of course. However, I do think it's a shame it's not really on display. I suppose space is tight at Heathrow, and there's no single gate to have it guarding like at many military airfields.

While the Landor Livery was my favourite Livery for the rest of the British Airways Fleet, The Concorde just looked better in that newer Livery Scheme that G-BOAB resides at Heathrow in, Just out of interest what is happening with BOAB? It should be in a Museum or on display somewhere, not rotting on the tarmac at Heathrow.

That's the Herald that was scrapped at Elvington, do you mean Concorde G-AXDN?
