Aurigny Air Services - Airline of the Channel Islands

Post by Cessna954 » Tue Mar 03, 2015 10:02 pm

2015 will see the final withdrawal from passenger operations of the Britten Norman Trislander with Aurigny after 44 years of continuos service. According to Wikipedia the origin of its name lies in the Auregnais word for Alderney and I believe is pronounced with a silent 'g' - 'Oreeney'.

My first flight ever was in an Aurigny Trislander from Guernsey to Jersey and as such they hold a special place in my love of aviation.

Firstly, a couple of their Islanders - G-AXWP at Guernsey in 1987

Sister aircraft G-AXWR at Guernsey in 1985

The Guernesy ramp with four Trislanders and a sole Islander in 1985

A Trislander mkIII-1 with the short nose and two bladed propeller configuration at Guernsey in 1987

Long nosed Trislander mkIII-2s at Guernsey in 1985

Trislander mkIII-2 at Alderney in 2007. By this time Aurigny had fitted 3 blade propellers on the front two engines so as to increase maximum take-off weight.

The little yellow Trislanders are part of Channel Island life and a series of children's books following the exploits of G-JOEY are still very popular today. Joey seen here at Alderney in 2007.

Finally sporting a more recent incarnation of the Aurigny livery

Maybe I need to book a return Southampton-Guernsey flight before they go out of business in June of this year.

I would be delighted to see some Aurigny Islander and Trislander pictures from fellow CA members.

Nice time line there

Often gets mispronounced. I'm a Guernsey man and the older of us and many Alderney locals I knew pronounce it Or-in-nee.

thanks for starting this one Neil, I've only been to the Channel Isles 3 times (and the last was just 2 nights in St Peter Port to take my parents out to dinner on their golden wedding (we booked them a holiday there for a week and surprised them with a visit). This was amongst the slides I was scanning last week and wasn't going to bother with it as it was into sun, taken through aircraft window has deteriorated with time (like me!) so was pretty poor but at least I can contribute one to the thread. It was taken in May 1977.

I'll see what i can find from my other 2 visits, I know on my second visit flew on a Trislander from Guernsey to Jersey and sat just behind the pilot and videoed nearly the whole flight, don't know if I had any stills though.

BTW on my second visit (1993)I found a little restaaurant called 'Les travaillers de la mer', fantastic little restaurant which I took my parents to on the 3rd visit in '99 - is it still there? Was worth the flight there and back just for the meal!

True...can't beat a shed

If I could have then I would have been straight up there with my hammer

Did a lot to lower the status of travel to the CI...they were hated by the public who saw these things replace Viscounts etc. Hardly a step forward

Still...I digress :)

Nice pic.
