Bruntingthorpe Super Guppy F-BGTV doomed

Post by andygolfer » Thu Nov 26, 2020 9:10 pm

Rather sad news as I've been associated with the group doing restoration work since they started 11 years ago as I ran their website and forum.

this has just been posted on the project facebook page (Super Guppy Restoration Project)

Evening all.

I have an update and I'm afraid it is not good news.

She has been moved to the disposal pan, prior to being cut up. I don't know when it's going to happen, but it is inevitable. At the end of the day, it's not our aircraft and she's on somebody elses land. We had zero say in any of this and everything we've heard has been third hand. Nobody in any position of authority has even picked up the phone to talk to us. It's a very sad end to 11 years of work and a complete waste of thousands of pounds.

We'll keep this page up, for posterity if nothing else, but we are actively looking for a new project. We've gathered a lot of kit and knowledge over the years and it'd be a shame to let that go to waste.

Any money we have left in the coffers, which isn't a great deal, will go to another restoration project, most likely the Typhoon restoration, but no decisions have been made yet.

We're really very sorry and we thank you for supporting us over the years.

another kick in the teeth for UK aviation restoration enthusiasts

What a shame, spent some time on a visit to Bruntingthorpe talking to some guys working on her but sadly the Guppy doesnt have the mass appeal of some other more attractive and shiney projects. The whole Bruntingthorpe thing just feels like it could have been handled a lot better, though in the current environment I fear it wont be the last aircraft/museum to go. Just such a shame for the guys that work so hard on such projects.

Terribly sad news, especially after all of the hard work the team have put in over the years. She will be sadly missed. :(

:(

Tragic news- may not have been the nicest looking of aircraft- but was a regular sight at LPL, Manchester and Hawarden pre Beluga's - will be a terrible loss- hopefully someone with deep pockets may save her, but not looking good at the moment.

Scrapping of the Guppy now started so won't be too long before it's gone. B747 SX-OAD is at an advanced stage of being scrapped.

the Bruntingthorpe FB page is reporting that some parts are going to NASA for spares for their example.

I've also been told from a reliable source that the cockpit will be saved - better than nothing

Rather old picture of it some years ago https://flic.kr/p/2iJUwri

Manchester RVP would be a good place for the cockpit section as they used to be in and out of here almost daily many years ago

The cockpit section has now been delivered to SWAM at St Athan along with the cockpit section of 747 SX-OAD.
