Canary country circular tour 19-04-2019, stage 4 - Felthorpe

Post by andygolfer » Sun Apr 21, 2019 1:52 pm

the start of our return leg to Essex and a stop at Felthorpe a few miles north west of Norwich. Time was getting on and nearly everybody had left for the day but a kind gentleman opened up the hangars for us so we had a briefish walk round and took a few pics and found quite a variety of types.....

In the club house there was an interesting picture frame with pieces of metal in it. On 3rd June 1966, Trident G-ARPY was on a test flight before delivery to BEA and it entered a deep stall which resulted in it's crashing at Felthorpe airfield sadly killing all on board. The aforementioned pieces of metal have been picked up on the airfield over the years and accompanying notes and photos tell the story of the crash.
there's a wikipedia page covering the story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966_Felt ... dent_crash

so thanks to Felthorpe for letting us look round and then it was off to the south of Norwich to Tibenham

An interesting selection, I'm interested in what the aircraft is in the background of G-OTTS wrapped in what looks like cardboard?

Almost certainly Chilton DW.1 G-JUJU. Shape looks right and Googling for images show right colours (or as much as you can see!).

More Norfolk gems - lovely. Felthorpe has changed a bit since the mid-80s when I used to visit.

I can see the one you mean Martin and I thought I knew the type if not the reg - Nigel Kemp was with me and fortunately he made a full log and posted it on the UK light Aviation enthusiasts google group and recorded it as G-JUJU Chilton DW.1 A PFA 225-12726 (I thought it was either a Chilton or a Miles Hawk from memory and my memory was right for once).

Here's a link to his full log (I believe you are a member of the group): https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... 1zb6xGfa6c
