Heathrow at night

Post by mach one » Fri Jun 17, 2016 8:55 pm

during my stay at heathrow last weekend i was in my room as it started to get dark so i thought i would try some shots at dusk so opened up the aperture to max and cranked up the ISO to 12800 and fired away

it is somthing i haven't really tried before, I am also surprised at how well the modern DSLR cameras handle the very high ISO,s, in the days of film I once tried a roll of Kodak ektra 1000 ISO and the grain in that was very visible and now you can go up to 12000 ISO plus and still get a reasonably acceptable image

and one more with the camera on a pillow on the windowsill F/16 30 sec exposure

Hi I used the Canon 5D Mark III and the canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II lens to take these shots

I was looking for somthing to give the camera a bit of height off the windowsill so folded a pillow in half and used that like you would with a bean bag, set up the camera and used mirror lock up and released the shutter with the self timer to avoid touching the camera

I had to find somthing to do after emptying the complementary mini bar :D

Excellent set with some learning for me there also re: using a pillow (or whatever is close to hand) - good tip.

THX

BET U PAID A BOMB FOR THE MINI-BAR

the 70-200 f2.8 is much more suited to these type of shots

but I still prefer my 100-400 v2 for aircraft photography

Canon did a good job with that lens

best

the Minibar was complimentary with the room i had so i felt it was compulsory to empty it, i was staying in the renaissance heathrow in an Executive Runway view Room, i managed to get it for £120.00 a night as a marriott members rate, but the rooms have unparalleled views of heathrow even if you do have to shoot through the double glazed windows

I have not tried the 100-400 mk II yet but i did own the MKI version for a few years until i sold it to my brother in law last year, and that was a good all round lens that offered lots of reach and range, I have been tempted to get hold of a MKII 100-400 to try but up until now i have resisted

I have the canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS mk II lens and the canon 300mm f/2.8L IS mk II lens and a canon 1.4 X converter mk III so have pretty much the range of the 100-400 covered with the two lenses and a converter so i keep telling myself that i dont need a 100-400 as well
