Heathrow Northerly Runway Pics

Spent my usual June weekend at the Renaissance Hotel :) l - but as Scunnycelt88 found out - the top floor is under renovation - resulting in a lower floor room and runway pics of only shorter aircraft - due to lighting poles :(.

Also as Scunnycelt88 experienced during his recent stay- the weather didn't help - overcast and changeable winds meant a trip to the Thistle hotel viewing deck for 09L approach shots, and the BA maintenance area for 27R approaches .

Mixed in amongst it all are some room shots of landing and departing aircraft using 27R snapped between the light poles, and some more distant heavies on the taxiways.

Waiting in Terminal 5 for my flight up to Newcastle - I was puzzled by the extra long gap in landing traffic :???: , soon became apparent why when this Typhoon & Spitfire flew over the 09L threshold - (747 in the Bovingdon hold caught completely by accident)

One last shot as we approach Newcastle - view of the "North East Air Museum" with Vulcan X319, and Trident G-ARPO standing out in Northeast Airlines yellow.

That's one of the best sets of shots I've seen from Heathrow with plenty of diversity and excellent sharp shots in some great light. :thumb:

What's the viewing deck like at the Thistle and do you have to be a guest to use it?

Mike - the viewing balcony at The Thistle is pretty good if easterly runways in use.

I have only used it for 09L landing shots - I reckon most planes would be very high on take off if 27R was in use.

You don't have to be a guest at the hotel to use it, I checked at reception - the staff were very nice and I did buy some drinks during my visit.

For photo's it is a bit back lit for most of the day - but if you are quick enough to catch landing aircraft with terminal 5 as the back drop you do get some ok contrast.

The thing I liked about it compared to my room in the Renaissance is that you are outdoors.

I would definitely recommend it when the 09 runways are in use.

Cheers Nigel (Bat21)
