London City Airport (LCY) 18-04-2017

Post by andygolfer » Wed Apr 19, 2017 9:31 am

I spent a few hours at LCY yesterday with the weather promising clear skies, unfortunately there was cloud about most of the time but the sun was fairly obliging, have to say the wind was very cold though, here are some of my efforts on my first visit for over 3 years:

starting with British Airways (Cityflyer):

and finally one from above, I've heard of ships that pass in the night, here is the aerial equivalent - planes that pass in the day! The Emirates was at 37000ft and the TUI at 38000!

thanks Paul, you can get nice shots there, I prefer them landing from the east though as you casn get nice pics as they drop over the university buildings (or appearing to land on it as per my avatar). There is building work going on beyond the northern boundary at present which can make the background scruffy.

The movements don't change much, this was my first visit for 3 years and I only saw about 4 new types or liveries and will probably not go back for a while now until something new starts serving it or unless i want to get some evening shots with the London skyline in the background - the classic pic from LCY!

Nice pictures Andy, thanks.
I have tended to go University side, so interesting to see shots southside. Seem to be more biz going in.
Have to agree about the regular movements, but we do seem to get a couple change each year.
Maybe the recent CS100 testing will lead to a few new ones.
Swiss have been using them into Heathrow, and I am sure I read that City is planned.

thanks Pete, those were the only 3 biz movements this time - was rather quiet on that front.

I believe that before the CS100 is approved they will have to prove their data to the airport for it to be accepted, will be nice to see them operating there.

thanks guys - anybody know what the minimum clearance is on airways?

It did look rather close considering their closing speed was probably around 1000mph!

I did some maths and the actual distance between wingtips measured diagonally when they passed was about 380m

A quick search according to an old book of mine about ATC -
Vertical flight separation normally 1000 ft, but when above FL290 the separation increases to 2000' to allow for barometric altimeters being less accurate as altitude increases. Do modern aircraft rely on radio altimeters or GPS rather than barometric ?
Seems to have started an interesting chat.
Whatever, it looks blooming close ! and a interesting picture.
Pete.

Definitely an old book! RVSM (Reduced Vertical Separation Minima) now applies across much of the World, with a vertical separation of 1000ft between FL290 and FL410.
LondonEye wrote:to allow for barometric altimeters being less accurate as altitude increases. Do modern aircraft rely on radio altimeters or GPS rather than barometric ?
RVSM requires highly accurate altimeters associated systems, certified for RVSM use. Currently they are all barometric I believe, and I can't see that changing any time soon.
