Manchester 14/1 - first go with the new camera!

Post by DaveSheffield » Sun Jan 15, 2012 12:33 am

Evening all. Made the trek up to Manchester in the early hours this morning not having a clue what to expect.
As it happened, the weather was perfect (if bloody cold!) and on arrival (in the dark) TMA Cargo and EYE were both visible at the top of Terminal 1 car park.
It was the first outing for my new Nikon, and despite the utter uselessness of the kit lens for getting photos further away than the end of my nose I was surprisingly pleased with the results. I will be buying a new lens as soon as possible, but the quality is definitely better than that of the compact camera I've lived with for a while.

If there's any hints, tips, comments or criticisms you'd like to give then now more than ever I'd love to hear them (or read them as it were). Enjoy:

The star of the show slowly crawled out to the expectant crowds:

And so ended another busy day at Manchester - more so off the airfield than on it!: Image

Many thanks as always for taking the time to look :thumb:

Hi mate :thumb:

Great set, which I enjoyed viewing.

Some pleasant angles too, as I sometimes find there is nothing worse than a zoomed up tight shot time after time after time..... ok in certain cases, but not every time - and you have some good background, which you get at Manchester.

Good set indeed.

I take it the standard Nikon lens is 18-55mm - ish???

Kind regards.

Marcus.

I agree with Marcus - I've really enjoyed looking through them too and it's nice to see those panoramic shots of the mound - a place I've never been as the Mrs. likes the comforts of the AVP too much....tea, burger, tea, hot-dog, tea, tea and more tea.

Much obliged to you both gentlemen.

Marcus, the kit lens is indeed an 18-55mm. It would've been nice just to be able to zoom in on some of the smaller aircraft a little - Blue Island's atr42 is somewhat lost in amongst the swathes of blue sky. I do try and take photos from some different angles as much as I can, as I hope my sets often demonstrate on here!

Mike, the AVP seemed to call at dawn when it was freezing cold but I had a cup of soup from the Greggs in T1 and so I dug in and persevered. It warmed up nicely with the sun on your back in fairness! I do love the café over there but I daresay it can get a bit pricey if you're anything more than an occasional visitor like me.

What a fantastic selection of shots. I love visiting MAN - its a bit of a trek from East Northants and feel like its my nemesis in some ways. Last two visits saw no use of 23L so am determined to have a successful day (or three) up there this year. Putting up with what must have been freezing conditions have paid off - the frosty atmosphere and lovely low winter light really do these shots proud. I like the way you've captured a bit of a feel for the sites too, the shots showing the location and people I think always add another element of interest to a thread.

Your shots have reinvigorated my interest in getting back up to MAN ASAP!! - a really terrific selection.

Thanks for all the kind comments folks, seriously!

In the weather conditions we had that day it was hard to take a bad picture to be fair, it was just one of those days where almost everything (except the Etihad blue moon departure :grr: ) went right photography-wise!

Even the Emirates/mound shot was a total fluke, I'd started to wander off to go over to the pub for some dinner, but then I saw the unmistakeable shape of the A380 coming in, turned back, realised I wasn't going to make it in time and just thought "I wonder?", pointed and shot that photo. Total fluke.
