Airbase coventry, 12th May

Post by Barton Buzzard » Fri May 13, 2011 2:30 pm

First visit for me, and had an enjoyable day. Lots of heavy pistons to drool over, and really friendly staff there. I was there at gates opening so the place was deserted for a couple of hours-I had the Nimrod all to myself (oops, sorry for mentioning M#l#t#ry in here.. ), they were very happy to let me crawl over the thing totally unescorted-after spending 15 minutes in the flight deck shooting hundreds of detail shots, I spent just as long exploring the back-and at no time did anyone else come aboard, a very pleasant experience. I suspect it would be a different matter at the weekend though, plenty of punters around to get in the way of the camera!

The DC6 cafe was just as Reg described it, so I wont upload any more pics of it. Got chatting to the nice young lady who works on board and it turns out she is a fellow Salfordian who moved there with her dad, who now works at Airbase.

Lots of Daks of course, my one teeny tiny regret is that they were not opened up, but lets not get too greedy, eh? Maybe next time ;)

The hangars were full of interesting stuff, and once again the casual and trusting atmosphere meant i was allowed to poke my lens pretty much wherever I wanted!

Ten out of ten for this outfit, I would certainly recommend a visit for those who have never been, it wont be long before I pay them a visit again.
I also paid a visit to the Midland Air Museum-another little gem of a place.

Just a small sample of what's on offer.

Later in the day an attempt was made to start up an engine-it failed. Shame, would have loved to have heard that thing rumbling away :(

Seems like a really nice place to visit these days,I might have to make a detour when I'm down in the summer - I'll even let SWMBO buy me lunch in the DC-6
I'm sure your shots of the Nimrod cockpit would go down well over on FC Gary ?

It is worth it Mike, on a nice sunny day it would be a lovely place to visit-check out the pistons, picnic on the grass overlooking the runway and a lovely lunch in the '6! :thumb:
And thanks, I'll pop on over to FC and see if they can use my cockpit shots
Cheers
Gary

I have to agree, come on Gary. I keep checking FC to see if you've posted. Seriously considering visiting there next week on my way up to Brunty.

Was at the Midland Air Museum Last April unfortunatley Airbase had not quite opened when I was down but if I ever happen to be in the area again then a visit to both Midland and Airbase will definately be in order...................

what a difference a few weeks make, they have shifted things around a bit since your visit and the three engined dak is now in one of the hangars up on jacks with quite a lot stripped off it and the DC6 G-APSA is out on the field where the dak was

One of the volunteers opened the DC6 for us so we got to go on board to have a good look around

Well worth a trip we had a great day at Coventry last week
