More old photographs from Birmingham International (BHX) in the 80s

Post by Tapdanceknifethrower » Thu Mar 30, 2023 10:00 am

Hi

A few more scans of old photographs from Birmingham International (BHX) in the 80s

ImageAeroflot IL-76 CCCP-86866 by Craig S Martin, on Flickr

Aeroflot Ilyushin IL-76M CCCP-86866 taxiing to depart Birmingham International. Although this aircraft has Aeroflot titles it was very probably a Soviet Air Force machine which makes sense as it was picking up The Red Army Ensembles' musical equipment.

Air UK Leisure Boeing 737-2E3 G-BNZT parked at Birmingham International this area became the Eurohub terminal at the time it was also the visiting GA apron hence the Cessna 411 EI-BCT in the foreground.

British Midland Fokker F27 G-BMAW being towed at Birmingham International.

A picture from 1986 and unusually for me it is Black & White. In the summer of 1986, there were a series of charter flights to Birmingham International (BHX) by American Trans Air using their Lockheed Tristar's. I believe this aircraft was N186AT but I am unsure of its ID or the exact date the picture was taken.

American Trans Air Lockheed Tristar N189AT at Birmingham International. Note Goodyear airship and two Heralds in the background. NB polarising tint is from the windows in the old viewing deck at Birmingham.

A bit grainy but these photographs bring back some memories

Regards
Craig

Some great memories there Craig, with some wonderful aircraft (well, perhaps not including the Short 360!). The ATA L-1011s looked fantastic in that colour scheme.

Hi Nick

You should remember many of these you were standing next to me when I took some of them

Yes some very interesting airliners and airlines both as subject and in the background never to be seen again :(

Regards
Craig

That was the first Il-76 that I had seen close-up, and what a fantastic view it was.

It seems almost fanciful now to say that the only Il-76s I had seen previously were Iraqi Airways examples at Heathrow!
