Amsterdam Schiphol- April 1971

Post by EGNH1909 » Mon Dec 19, 2016 8:33 pm

Took these at Schiphol while on a trip to Holland and Germany in 1971- (my dad took me to meet & stay with the German family he'd been billeted with near Dusseldorf at the end of WW2) - thought they might be worth a peek.

PH-DNA DC9 Srs 15- I'd forgotten how short the 15 series were .

There have been some great historical posts here recently, and this is another one. Look at all those lovely DC-8s, Caravelles, and even a Tu-124. Interesting to see a 737-100 too. The Northwest 707 is probably my favourite though.

another cracking set and very difficult to pick a favourite.

Some old favourites there that I had forgotten about, I don't remember ever seeing a KLM 747 in that old scheme, they could only have used it for a short while

thanks for posting them Paul and already looking forward to the next set of gems!

Fantastic set Peter - many thanks for sharing. Have to agree, hard to choose a fav :thumb:

I was at Schipol at a similar time, so brings back some really good memories :)

Strange isn't it, that Aeroflot had the largest registration, yet you would have thought they would have had the smallest :???:

The wingspan on the Caravelle was pretty long as well, great angle you got there. I even remember their triangle shaped windows

Thanks again

Martin

Great set of photos. Favourite for me is the Tu104. Like many of us, I wish that I could have taken more pictures at the time.
Northwest is interesting too. I did not realise then that they were visitors to Europe.
The KLM white top scheme introduced in 1971 was short lived, could not find out why. I recall seeing DC9's at Heathrow.
As Andy said about my recent Heathrow post, the backgrounds reveal much too. Note the lack of buildings as well.
Thanks
Pete.

Wonderful shots, I didn't have my first visit there until 1976 and I spent hours on that balcony over the years after that - I used to get staff tickets (I only paid 10% of the Air Anglia/Air UK fare when I worked at Edinburgh Airport) and had many day trips there. I found it to be a bit more interesting than Heathrow was as there was always a few really exotic visitors that we never saw in the UK (and I also got my duty-free on the way back  ).

It has always amazed me how well the Dutch planned for future growth of air travel as the airport was vast even in the 70s, not like the short-sightedness we had (and still have) in the UK.

Looking forward to more nostalgic gems soon. :) :thumb:

Wow!!

Some lovely aircraft there. The CP Air "8" is a beauty. They used to be regular visitors to Manchester in the late 70's when I started spotting. Great livery on them.

Love these nostalgic posts

Cheers everyone for your comments/info and great stories!

I've got some more from Schiphol which I'll post up soon.

Mike- you were right about how vast the place was even then-You've reminded me that I never actually got a picture of anything landing or taking off because the runways were that far away- only had a 135mm lens if I remember.

Best Wishes everyone

Pete
