Day three was to be a trip to Vnukovo followed by Ostafievo in the afternoon. On arrival at Vnukovo there was some delay before access to the ramp was granted, by which time storm clouds were gathering and everything had got decidedly dark. Only a few shots were managed before a downpour started that lasted throughout the rest of the visit. It was particularly unfortunate as there was an amazing array of Russian aircraft in a wide variety of colour schemes, probably more-so than any other airport visited on the trip.

Vnukovo Airlines had more or less ceased operations the previous year so a good number of their aircraft was in various states of repair and storage:

After a number of wrong turns we eventually found the relatively new "Gazprom" Airport Terminal at Ostafievo where we were guests of Gazpromavia. Although totally devoid of any activity throughout our visit we were assured that the field is busy in the early mornings and late evenings when the gas flights depart and return from the far north. The terminal was remarkably modern by Russian standards (at the time) and after full security screening we were let loose on the Gazpromavia ramp. The owners allowed us to climb all over one of their Yak 42's (inside and out) and gave us a tour of their line-up of stored Antonovs. Unfortunately the military side of the field was not visited despite tantalising glimpses of some rare Soviet era machines. However on the bright side the weather had started to pick up as the afternoon progressed:
