Heathrow - As I remember it...

Hi all, First posting on the civil site, I sometimes post ' on the other side ' military
Had my first trip to LHR the other weekend, not been for about 4 years , sadly it's
not what I (or we ) remember..Infact from where I was at Hatton Cross 27L the place
looked like a building site with it's own airport.
So to revive a few memories, I've scanned in some old slides from the era when we took
it all for granted and in my case often never bothered to take a photo of things I thought I'd
get a better one next time.
Hope the post isn't to long, if so, apologies if you get bored easily ..

Well done if you made it this far...
Just for interest, the photo of the BOAC Land Rover, or should I say 747-100 (G-AWNB) was taken at what is now
BA Maintenance back in about 1971 or 2 when Ian Allan ran a trip for a 2 hour flight for the dizzy price of
£7 - took a lot of saving my pocket money for that , had to save even more as they did a follow up flight on a
Super Vc10 (G-ASGI) including a low approach at Jersey ...
The Jumbo was late arriving as there were only a few in service at the time, so while it was being serviced they
took us on a bus ride around the outside of the airfield , I've even got a cine film of the event...!
..
Thanks - Paul

Hi,

Nice pictures and thanks for a trip down memory lane. I used to go to Gatwick in the morning and catch the bus to Heathrow for the afternoon.

Happy days.

That's a wonderful set of shots - loads of excellent stuff there, even an American Airlines 747SP. :)

I'm just wondering why the BEA Trident 2, Balkan Tu-154, Icelandair DC-8 and the JAT 727 etc. have digits missing from their registrations - the photos must have been altered for some strange reason ?

Any more ?

Thanks for the replies so far ..
Firstly - Yes, I too used to do LGW then LHR (wasn't the M25 quiet in those days)
Secondly - Blame the scanner, when I scanned them I noticed the odd letter or figure was missing, it had the
same effect on some aircraft windows too , they were scanned quite a few years back on a flat bed scanner.
Keep saying I will re do them on a more modern one, but the thought of scanning over 2000 aircraft & railway slides again !!
So Thirdly - Yes there are more , but some suffer the same problem .
Thanks again - Paul

That's a strange one Paul. If you look at the 3rd shot (the BA Tridents) - the nearest one has 2 digits missing from it's reg and the 3rd has a load of windows missing, that's not a scanner problem !

I'd love to see more though. :)
