My beloved Deltic. **UPDATED IMAGES**

Post by Marcus G » Tue Oct 25, 2011 11:40 am

All :thumb:

Other than military & commercial aviation, my interest used to be Deltics until BR withdrew them from service back in 1982. I vowed never to photograph a Deltic on some 20mph branch line with a weekend warrior driving it. My interest in Deltics started as a young boy with my Dad being a Gateshead-based locomotive driver, and he was lucky enough to spend part of his career and all of the Deltic's operating life driving them from Newcastle to Edinburgh & Kings Cross.

But that all changed in May this year when 55022/D9000 was leased to GB Railfreight to operate the Alcan trains between North Blyth & Lynemouth, up on the Northumberland coast.

The last 30 years of not photographing a Deltic were more than made up over those next few weeks, a sight & sound that I had missed so much

Just how I remember a Napier engine, on full bore:

Starting one of those Napier engines after a lengthy signal stop at Freemans crossing:

That unmistakable outline:

"Royal Scots Grey":

The headboard specially provided by GB Railfreight:

North Blyth Alcan:

Approaching Woodhorn Colliery musuem, and the old pitwheels:

Full power on the evening working to Lynemouth:

Awaiting duty:

A long future ahead:

Resting for the night at North Blyth:

Twilight beauty:

Thanks for looking, and C&C's welocme of course.

Kind regards.

Marcus.

I'm not into trains what so ever. But I've always loved this train. I had a Hornby one as a kid, and would now love one as a model. Wouldn't know where to look though...

Great photos! Would love to see one in person. :)

Cheers Goose, I'm hoping for a 1/35th (or there abouts) scale plastic kit, but I doubt there would be one in that size and plastic?

Thank you for the comments guys, really appreciate them.

My Dad almost had a tear in his eye when he viewed the images...... and the 1st image of the next set shows a younger looking Dad in 1966, at the controls of one of these beasts. He is 88 now, and NEVER changed a bit. He was also a very well know artist in his day, and the press loved him, and a few press images from the late 50's & early 1960's.

And some more of 55022/D9000 on the Blyth & Tyne.
