I spent the last 3 days at Mersea Island in Essex and went out searching for red squirrels this morning and was fortunate to find 4, 2 of which were very close and I was able to get some unobstructed photos of them......

Of great interest Andy - I love red squirrels. Beautiful clear and sharp shots.

Andy, I am extremely jealous - I have never seen a red squirrel in real life, let alone photographed one. I especially like image 2.

I haven’t seen a red squirrel since the 1970s in Switzerland, when they were tame enough to run up my trouser leg to take food from my hand. By the way, if you like a good tongue twister try the German word for squirrel Das Eichoenchen!

thanks for the comments everybody, they are spreading well on Mersea Island since the r-introduction about 7 years ago. Around 30 were released and the people who managed the releases estimate that there are over 100 now even with a few losses mainly due to traffic and natural causes

Great pic's Andy- don't see any at all up here in Runcorn- just the grey one's albeit- there are red squirrels in Freshfields (Formby) a National Trust location and on Anglesey.
