Very nice looking place. Whats the best way to get there? via Rhodes then ferry?

Yes fly to Rhodes and when you come out of the airport exit there is a taxi rank across the road. Also it might depend on the time you go. We went in June. It's comfortably warm without being too hot but because it is so near the Turkish coast temperatures can rocket after mid June. We were told that you don't need to pre-book the ferry crossing but I did and I don't think there is any difference in price one way or another.

We found that there were loads of seats on the ferry in June but it's your decision also as I said depending on what time of the year you are going. If you want to pre-book this is the link to book direct for peace of mind https://www.ferries.gr/dodekanisos/timetable.htm

Rick stein did a series of programmes from Symi and that was a house overlooking Symi harbour, I am not sure if it was his house or not

Yes that is correct but it wasn't his house.
