SPOTM October 2019 - British holiday airlines of the past

Post by andygolfer » Tue Oct 15, 2019 10:01 am

This is the SPOTM (Special Photo Of The Month) competition for October 2019 and the subject is 'British holiday airlines of the past (either defunct or absorbed into other companies)'. Sadly yet another joined those ranks last month so Thomas Cook aircraft are eligible for the competition.

The subject of your entry should be a photo of one or more civil registered aircraft operated by a British airline which primarily served holiday traffic in the past (either defunct or absorbed into other companies) it must show a civilian registration but that may be foreign if the aircraft was leased at the time of the photo as long as it was operated by a British company with their titles included even if not in the full scheme.
Preserved aircraft of such defunct airlines are eligible but aircraft carrying a genuine military registration at the time of the photo are excluded.

Photography Competition Rules :-

1. Only one entry per user, unless posting on behalf of another person who is unable to do so themselves (children for example). If this is the case, please state so on your entry..

2. The photo may have been taken on any date, it does not have to be taken in the month of the competition

3. The image can be photo-shopped to some extent, levels changes, cropping, sharpening etc. are all acceptable. The photograph must retain it’s initial subject though, don’t make it something it’s not. HDR images are not acceptable. If you are unsure, please PM a moderator.

4. The competition will remain open until 23.59 (UK time) on the 7th November 2019 - please note new extended closing date to enable anyone with a last minute entry some breathing space.

5. Voting will be conducted by a poll open to all the membership shortly after the closure of the competition.

6. 'Rule 6...' There's no rule 6 Bruce'

7. The decision of the moderating team is final.

8. All images must be posted in line with the usual CA posting rules (size etc.), please read them if you're not sure how to post.

9. The rules may be subject to change, and these will be posted on this thread.

10. Please also embed the images and not links to images, if you're not sure how to do it then shout up and someone will sort it out. It is permissible to change your entry before the closing date.

11. Do not comment on other member's photos.

12. A brief description of where and when the image was taken would be nice too.

If you have any questions please PM me

Good luck everyone.

Managed to dig out something to replace the Monarch, as I've posted that on here before. G-TCBB Boeing 757-236 at Grenoble on 10th March 2012, waiting to take me home from snowboarding at Les Deux Alpes.

here's a very old one from me taken sometime in 1976 at Gatwick. A Dan air BAC.111 (looks like G-BDAT but not certain) parked on a stand on the northern pier which by the time it was taken was closed off for security reasons (I think that happened in 1974 - PM me if I'm wrong please). They also operated numerous Comets at that time.
The north side of Gatwick had no northern terminal and not even a satellite at that time and the light and business aircraft parked where the latter now stands. On my earliest visits there was just a chain link fence about 4ft high along that side so photos were easy - how times change. I didn't take many photos in those days because of the cost!

I'll go with this one.
Laker Airways was formed in 1966 as a charter airline. It started the Skytrain service in 1977, the forerunner of today's low cost airlines.

Seen landing at Corfu 12/07/2019 this A321 started life as in May 2013 as G-ZBAE of Monarch
Where it can be seen on its tippy toes at Manchester here https://flic.kr/p/KpE191
It joined Thomas Cook In April 2018 after Monarch went to the wall .
2 months or so after this was taken on the 22nd Sept it flew its last flight for Thomas Cook as MT1481 from Corfu to Manchester & was ferried to Lasham on Octber 13th

LY-VED, Airbus 321 on lease to Thomas Cook, seen making an evening arrival in Lanzarote, September 2018. Formerly VP-BUP of Aeroflot, it carried (for a while) this hybrid Thomas Cook/Aeroflot colour scheme.

Normally associated with summer charters this My Travel A320 is seen being towed onto stand in Manchester, in the background you can see another two British Airlines that are also now gone.

G-AWXJ BAC 1-11 416EK of Autair at MAN copied from a poor slide. Probably taken early 70s when you could walk along the piers.
