Chris, i swopped my 70-200L for the 70-300L & its a fantstic lens but much heavier. Its built like a tank, very solid & its sharp all the way through.It is very expensive but i dont regret swopping. Its IS works great in low light.

The 70-200L is a fantastic lens for the money & you can always save for the 1.4 converter if you need more reach.Its very light weight & the quality is superb. It will work fine on your 550D. I had one & sold it to upgrade but wouldn't hesitate to get another.
