photobucket disabling accounts - photos no longer visible

Post by andygolfer » Sat Jul 01, 2017 4:42 pm

you may have noticed this image on various posts (and the admins' signatures) over the last few days:

Image

It seems that photobucket are disabling accounts or at least photos which are posted from photobucket accounts to 3rd parties such as forums like this as they say doing so breaches their terms and conditions. They now require you to pay a subscription (around $400) to allow you to continue to link to images hosted on photobucket without them being disabled.

it appears to be a gradual process - many are still visible but they are gradually going so if you are a photobucket user and should you wish to continue posting images here and elsewhere you may wish to (or rather will have to) change your photo hosting platform or alternatively just pay up as they request.

If you have posted photos here which are hosted on photobucket then you may even wish to re-load them from another host - a long job but you might feels it's worthwhile. I suppose I'm going to have to see if there are any I feel that proud of that I want them preserved on here for the future ( won't take long :o ) and host them elsewhere.

It's already leaving a few holes in the Hall of fame but without the photo owner's permission we can't do anything about that I'm afraid.

agree and yes in this case but only by using asterisks.

I think their advertisers are going to be highly peeved (could have sworn!) as the numbers looking at their adverts is likely to (or has) dropped through the floor so they will be pulling their adverts quicker than a monkey pulls his......

I didn't realise how many photos I have on pb which are all on here (and other sites), starting to transfer all the decent ones to Flickr.

does anybody know if it's possible to host photos on your own website and then generate a code therefrom (as you do on flickr or pb) to post on a forum please?

Yes, very easy. Just use the URL of the image between the img tags, for example:

Code: Select all

If you've developed the website yourself, you'll probably know what the image URLs are. If not, navigate to the image you want to post on here, right click it, choose "Copy image location" or similar, and then paste it between the img tags.

Just got the message so having to think about Flickr or getting my son to build me a website. Just wondering though why we have to use a hosting site and not upload direct from own computer like Facebook?

unfortunately phpbb doesn't allow direct uploads, probably because of the amount of storage it would involve.

That is probably one of the reasons that makes FB so popular, no intermediate hosting and so quick and easy anybody (even my wife, so I do mean anybody :D ) can do it.
