Washington & Baltimore trip May/June 72 Logs Pt1

Post by Wiltshire_Victor » Wed Mar 30, 2016 12:02 pm

I hope this series of daily logs will be of interest to members here. Myself and four friends decided to go to the "Transpo 72" exhibition in Washington DC in 1972. I was barely 16, how I persuaded my parents to let me go is still a mystery. The eldest of our team was only 20. Tickets were booked via "Pettit & Thomson Air Travel" who had chartered a British Caledonian B707 G-AWWD to take us from LGW to Dulles. I can't recall the exact cost but it was well under £100 for the return travel, transfers and four nights' accommodation in the "Harrington Hotel" in Washington which I do remember was fairly close to the White House. We flew out on May 30th 1972, the first USA trip for any of us. Big thanks to my friend Dave, one of those who went on this trip, for providing the log

These were noted at LGW prior to boarding our BCAL flight.

After formalities had been observed, we went to our hotel to check in, after which we immediately hailed two taxis to take us straight to Washington National where we first walked along the perimeter fence line logging everything we could see in the various GA hangars before spending the remainder of the day sat in extremely comfortable chairs on the mezzanine floor of the terminal building which looked out across the apron. Everything that landed or departed taxied past us, the volume of movements both GA/Biz and airliner was incredible

Thanks for posting these lists Wiltshire Victor. I was on the same trip, which I think cost £89. I have started to compare it with my list and it has helped to resolve some of the doubtful entries in my list (for example I had N700G Learjet which I thought must have been N7000G so it was nice to have that confirmed). Incidentally N550MS was a Twin Bonanza c/n DH-276.

Morning Ken

What a coincidence, and what a trip it was. Only my third ever foreign jaunt of any kind and my first ever trip to the USA. I recall that the weather was baking hot. Just out of interest, how did you spend your five days there?

Cheers
Graham

Morning Graham,

Tuesday - same as you but comparing the list we must have arrived at National a bit later than you.
Wednesday - National in the morning then Allegheny Convair (N5818) to Baltimore, back in Beech 99 (N296HA) in the middle of a thunderstorm.
Thursday - Early shuttle to La Guardia (N8921E), back in the evening (N8918E).
Friday - Sightseeing round Washington, then to National
Saturday - Dulles
Sunday - Gatwick, Redhill, Biggin Hill.

It was fantastic. Saw so much I thought it would cure me of spotting but I went back to the States next year on a spotting trip.

Cheers
Ken

Cheers Ken, we took the Greyhound to Baltimore, but I have to admit I'm envious of the ride you took to La Guardia. Great memories and it was to be 34 years before I took my next US spotting trip to Chicago in 2006 due to marriage, kids ,mortgages and the like. I got back to Chicago the following year too. That was something else. Unfortunately, during a recent house move, I mislaid a large proportion of those logs and as both were solo trips, I stand very little chance of recovering that info. Funnily enough, I have all the US domestic and long haul logs for both trips, but not the logs for the rest of the world.
