Bourgas, Bulgaria September 2017

Post by Martin » Mon Sep 25, 2017 6:56 pm

11/9/17

This years holiday was a week in Bulgaria. We flew out of BHX during the afternoon on G-TAWU with nothing entering the logbook. After about 3.5hrs, we arrived at Bourgas.

Bourgas has a single runway (04/22) with a full length parallel taxiway. The airport has 27 stands which are all remote and can handle aircraft up to An124/B747 size. Stands 7, 8 and 9 which are located directly infront of the terminal are used for parking GA.

We parked on Stand18 and disembarked the aircraft onto waiting buses which drove us the short distance across the ramp to the immigration hall. As it was dark and late, we went straight through immigration to the baggage reclaim area. From here, there's only a limited view over the ramp so once we had our bags, it was past customs and onto the coach up to the resort.

12/9/17

We stayed in the resort of Sunny Beach which is around 20miles north-east of Bourgas. Sunny Beach is around 10 miles out on the extended centreline for runway 22 at Bourgas airport so some aircraft do fly over the resort inbound to the airport. During the week I was there, the runway usage between 04 and 22 was around 50/50. Each day there were around 25-30 flights (as it was just outside the main holiday season, some of the charters had already finished). The busiest period was between 8am-10am with between 1-3 movements per hour outside that period.

When 22 is in use, Aircraft coming from the North or North-East pass overhead the resort at 3000ft. Aircraft from other directions (which mainly was traffic from Western Europe) tended to turn onto final at around 5-6 miles unless it was busier, then they were turned final over Sunny Beach. If 04 was in use, traffic from the N/NE passed the resort at around FL90-FL80 routing downwind right hand.

Due to Bulgaria's history, the country see's a large amount of visitors from former Soviet countries so the airport gets some interesting movements (although some of the more interesting movements are high season only, i.e. Gazpromavia, I-fly, Pegas Fly, SCAT & Uzbekistan).
Scheduled traffic consists of a couple of Wizz per day, 3x S7 Airlines (1x A321 around 0830, 1x B767 around 1550 & 1x A321 around 2230) and a Rossiya A320 around 1930. (S7 & Rossiya also operate some charter flights).

Seen overhead during the day inbound to Bourgas were

SP-ENL B737 ENT
VQ-BQJ A321 SBI
VQ-BUF B737 SDM
YR-SEA A320 SEK (operating for TVS)

When I went down to breakfast, they were landing on 22 so timed breakfast perfectly to finish and then see another Rossiya B737 and a Motor Sich An74. Unfortunately, they changed to 04 whilst I was eating breakfast and I spent 10-15minutes waiting for them both before I realised :grr: . The Motor Sich is a weekly charter from Zaporizhia and is scheduled to be an An140 but An74 UR-74026 seems to regularly operate this flight.

A couple of other flights of interest not spotted were a Yamal Airbus in the early hours and a second Israir flight (which was operated by a Trade Air A320).

The 04 curse struck again late afternoon, after being on 22 most of the day, I got into a position to see Bravo Airways MD83 UR-CPR inbound only to realise they had switched to 04 and it was duly missed.

After dark, there was a Ural A320 & A321, a Nordwind A321, Belavia B737 and a Royal Flight B757.

16/9/17

Saturday was pretty quiet so no great shakes that they spent most of the day on 04

UR-DNG E145 UDN (operating for WRC)
VQ-BQH A321 SBI

During the day there were three TUI Belgium flights and three Norwegian B737s. After dark, there were a couple of Belavia flights.

17/9/17

Sunday was pretty quiet aswell with these few seen with nothing really worth looking out for other than the Nordwind. The Bourgas Airport website shows the arrivals over the next 24hrs so its worth checking that for anything of note.

18/9/17

Logged overhead the resort were the following, all inbound on 22

G-FDZG B737 TOM
G-FDZU B737 TOM
G-TAWM B737 TOM
VQ-BQA B757 KTK
VQ-BQH A321 SBI
YL-LCL A320 TCX

Unfortunately, just after the Azur B757 arrived during the afternoon, they switched to 04 so missed a Nordwind B738. There was also a Rossiya B738 during the afternoon which was also missed.

In the evening, it was then time to head back to the airport to head home. Bourgas has a rather compact single storey building. Once through security and in the inevitable shopping mall that is duty free, the front of the terminal is glass and looks across most of the ramp. At each end of the departure lounge, there is an outside smoking area but they also have a thick glass panel to look through onto the ramp so probably not great for any photographers. Stands 24 and 25 at the North end can't be seen from the departure lounge (during arrival & departure, Bulgarian Air Charter aircraft occupied these stands) and stands 10, 11, 26 & 27 at the South end can only partially be seen (used for cargo aircraft & the occasional miltary transport i.e. USAF C17s that pass through the airport). As mentioned before, any GA park on stands 7, 8 or 9 which are located directly infront of the terminal so easy to read off.

The following were seen whilst waiting for the flight home, the star is obviously the IL76

G-TAWV B737 TOM
LZ-BHI A320 BGH (arrived using an ELB callsign)
LZ-LAA A320 BUC
LZ-LAC A320 BUC
LZ-LDK MD82 BUC
LZ-LDN MD82 BUC
LZ-LDT MD82 BUC
LZ-LDY MD82 BUC
RA-76502 IL76 AZS
VP-BSW A320 SVR
VP-BWH A320 SDM
VQ-BPX B737 SDM
VQ-BSX B767 KTK
VQ-BVF B747 ABW

D-COLT Emb505
LZ-TBP Ce501

Also present was Aw189 I-RAIU which had a taped on reg' and I believe was on delivery to a Russian operator.

As we left on G-TAWB back to BHX, an Azur Air B737 was on final :(
