Heading South on the western airfield perimeter (Loxley Lane)

South Warwickshire Flying School and Avro Vulcan XM655

The first left turning is for the South Warwickshire Flying School and Avro Vulcan XM655, there is normally three aircraft lined up parellel to the fence and you can normally see two Cessna's parked to the left of the car park nose on but stay off the grass on the left. If don't want to go airside, leave the car park on foot and turn right here and you should be able to see and photograph all the aircraft parked here over the hedges.

To go airside walk around the building to the foyer on the far side of the building and ask at Reception to see the Flying School aircraft and/or the Vulcan. Once airside keep well away from the Taxiway and keep a good look since when Runway 18 is in use aircraft will do their power checks next to you on the Taxiway.

Bravo Taxiway/RVP Gate

The next left turn is for the RVP gate here you can see all aircraft on East facing Bravo Taxiway and the majority of the Take Flight Aviation aircraft which is on the right hand side of the main North/South taxiway. The airside gate is only gate where any emergency vehicles that needs to go airside can pass through so do not block the road between the main road and the gate.

There is two rows of parked aircraft on the left handside of the main taxiway where a large number of aircraft are parked, depending on how busy is it you should be able to see the back row right back to the red and white weather station. The first row is normally much busier so you will most likely only able to see the first one or two aircraft registrations.

Take Flight Aviation

The next left turn is Take Flight Aviation and the overflow car park, on the immediate left is a small white hangar where G-JMKE is normally kept but there is a tall chain link fence between the car park and the hangar which would ruin any images from this side, you can see any other aircraft on both sides of the taxiway that were obscured when taking pictures from the RVP Gate.

On the right hand side of the car park there is normally three aircraft airside with their tails pointing towards you also you can clearly see both rows of parked aircraft on the other side of the taxiway. If you look right you can see firstly the apron for the maintenance company and then the main apron between you and the control tower.

Main car parking area and control tower

The next left is the control tower, café, museum and main car park. Head to the large black gate on the left hand side of the control tower and you can see all the aircraft on the maintenance and main aprons and any aircraft on the far side of the taxiway that you haven't been able to get yet.

If you wish to go airside except for the South Warwickshire Flying School and Heli Air go through the small tunnel on the right hand side of the tower then turn left and go up the stairs. Once airside keep a good lookout and if you have a hi-vis jacket wear it, head right parallel to the café and the other buildings towards the small hangars, on the way you will pass the museum with it's low fence so you should be able to get a few quick images of the aircraft. Keep going towards the hangars you should be able to get some good images of all the aircraft parked outside the hangars but you will need to ask permission from the hangar owner at each hangar to take pictures, and go inside them. Once completed their should be a single white Cessna right at the bottom. Now cross over the taxiway onto the grass and get any close up images of the Helicopters but keep a good look out since the helicopters come into land very quickly.

Keep going on the left hand side of the taxiway and if the pumps are completely clear on both vehicles and aircraft. You should be able to get some mid-range shots on any helicopters parked up on the stands nearby.

Now turn around and go through the two rows of the aircraft parked on the grass heading North towards the tower, staying on the right hand side head towards the E-W Bravo Taxiway and get any close ups of the aircraft then head back towards the tower and cross over to the right hand side and head toward the tower getting images of the Take Flight Aviation aircraft on the right hand side and any aircraft on the two aprons. Once finished head back up to the control tower and say Thank you for the access.

Heli Air

Once back in the car park, turn left out of the car park and take the first left into the Heli Air car park. Now turn right and head into the silver Heli Air building and ask to look inside their hangar. Access to the hangar at weekends is very rarely refused since maintenance rarely happens, however during the week permission may not be granted since the engineers will be inside the hangars. Once permission has been granted step over the fence in front of the Office and get any aircraft on the helicopter stand on the left hand side however you not allowed onto the taxiway at any time so if any helicopters have recently landed on the other side of the taxiway so cannot get close to them. Now head into the hangar and get any images you need then head through the middle set of hangar doors into the other side of the hangar. Once finished in this section keep going towards the apron and the fuel pumps BUT if any aircraft are using the pumps stay inside the Hangar until they are gone. Once the fuel pumps are clear you can walk on the grass to the left of the apron onto the last remaining stand if their is a helicopter there. DO NOT WALK ON THE APRON ANYWHERE NEAR THE FUEL PUMPS OR ROUND TO THE STANDS ON THE FAR SIDE.

Turn around then re-enter the hangar then leave the hangar and head back into the Silver office building to say Thank you and that you have finished (this part is very important since access has been withdrawn because of people not doing this since it's to do with security and Heli Air fire safety policy)

Now leave your vehicle in this car park and turn left onto the road, keeping to the right hand side at all times and if you have a hi-vis jacket put it on and walk towards the S-bend in the road around 170m away, swap to the left hand side once past the first corner and walk on the grass verge, here there are large gaps between the bush's to see any aircraft around the fuel pumps, on the helicopters stands and any aircraft using the taxiway to/from the runways.

I'm researching for a forthcoming trip to mid Wales and wonder if anybody can tell me how up to date this info for Wellesbourne is now - it was written 8 years ago so I expect there have been some changes.
any advice would be most welcome
