Old Warden Wings and Wheels, 04-09-2016

Post by andygolfer » Wed Sep 07, 2016 10:13 am

I went along to this event on Sunday and it was an excellent show despite the cloudy conditions, a bit testing for photography at times to say the least. These are the first ones that I've uploaded and will follow up with some more once I am back on my PC with a cable connection (otherwise I will use up my a big chunk of my data allowance. Hope you like this taster...

Thanks for the comments Nigel. I did all of these using back button focusing which I'm getting used to but still occasionally forget but I did seem to have far fewer focus failures and as I was using slow shutter speeds to try for prop blur (I used TV instead of AV for all of the flying) I was quite pleased.

Also to try to get a better success rate with focusing I switched from high speed continuous to low speed as I'm sometimes suspicious that the auto focusing doesn't always keep up with it properly.

Whether the above did make a difference or whether i was just lucky, I don't know but at least it wasn't worse with these settings.

Some lovely shots there Andy, e.g. DH88 topside. I like the idea of the Piston Provost displaying with a JP!

Thanks Nick, the Provosts were an interesting combination. I don't know what the max speed of the piston Provost is compared to the minimum of the JP but they must have been flying in a fairly small speed window which made it a very good piece of flying.

There were several formation pairs in the display and I enjoyed them all however I don't enjoy the aerobatics at Old Warden as much, maybe I'm an old fart or a traditionalist but OW to me is all about showing off these old aircraft in a natural environment and I'm happy to see a few curved passes and topsides sort of more natural and different angles and so on and the higher energy aerobatics don't seem to fit in with the ambiance of the place. The Blades were there and they did very little for me and they were more distant compared to most 'acts' and I didn't enjoy them at all.
I'm off to Duxford tomorrow which has a totally different atmosphere and if there are aerobatics there (the Reds are there at least) I might enjoy them more. Anyone care to discuss?
