BLACK BOX RECEIVER

Postby bigyun2000 » Fri Jul 09, 2010 7:35 pm

Hi all.

I used to have many scanners and HF equipment and have always enjoyed listening to aircraft transmissions. However due to having the big C which is rotting my brain at an accelerated rate i have decided to sell them all.

I decided to purchase a Black Box receiver (look here http://www.wsplc.com/acatalog/Black-Box_Airband_Radio.html.

Just wondering if anyone else has one of these and to see what sort of performance it has.

I live in Rawmarsh in Rotherham directly under UL613 just between MAMUL & UPTON & close to U/M150 (I think). I was hoping to hear everything that passed over me but as yet haven't hear anything.

Also while i am at it. What frequencies should I be hearing? As i may have to get another scanner and just use the Black box when at airports.

Many thanks. And a big hello to all those who know me from the Fighter Control group.

Regards
Tony (ex RAF Gulf War 1 Vet (MTD))

Hi Tony.

the problem with the balck box receivers is the range.

the receiver has a very broad bandwith to enable it to pick up all the frequencies in the airband at the same time.

so in order to ensure it only picks up close by transmissions, the range is very short.

So it won't pick up the transmissions from the overhead flights as they are too far away from the black box.

as for the frequencies you need, i'll figure out where you are, and post again.

Thanks Geoff.

Someone did say it was good for about a mile. So thought that maybe I could hear aircraft a mile up. (don't ask how many feet a mile is)

Cheers

Hi Tony, does it have a squelch on it.

if it does, try turning it all the way noisy and see if that helps.

it may be that the signal is just not strong enough over the noise to open the squelch.

Hi again.

YES it does have a squelch and i have tried it both ways. However i am going to try an experiment. A comany I know produces link cables so i am going to order an SO239 to Mono 3.5mm. Then i can use my external antenna. But i guess that i will have terrible pager interfierence. But worth a try.

Any news on freqs?

Hi Tony, sorry, been a bit busy working with it being GP weekend.

where do you live, it will help me suss out the freqs for you.

Good idea with the antenna, but as you say, may well be swamped with pagers and the dreaded cell masts.

Hi Geoff

Any news on frequencies used in my area please? (Info at 1st msg)

The black box is working OK. But it don't half run batteries down quick. Today has been the best day so far so thought there maybe a lift on.
Plenty of traffic working 133.800 Manchester (I think).

Anyway off back outside to have a cigar before it rains.
Thanks

I would appreciate it if anyone could possibly help with the frequencies please.

The Internal Links are fine, not checked his external ones, I'll talk to Jonjo when I get home :)

Use the Sectors page [?] to find out what sectors are in your area, then search those sectors on the Frequencies page [?], you'll get all the frequencies you need :)
