London City photography locations
can anybody tell me how up to date is the info in the london city spotting guide topic please?
( http://www.plane-mad.com/airport-spotti ... -eglc.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
I'm on hols all next week and might give the city airport a go for once for a bit of variety. I'm only really interested in photography not spotting but IF I go and anyone wants a list I can probably do one off my photos if it will help.
Spot C - Tereza Joanne Car park in the plane mad guide looks favourite so wondered if access is still as easy as reported when it was written , MTIA

Re: London City photography locations
I know this is over a year old but I thought I would chip in with a suggestion.
Personally I prefer Spot B as you do get some great photos from the North side.

Re: London City photography locations
Just a few notes from me based on my own experiences:
Spot A is fine but as you are on airport property you might get moved on.
Spot B is easily accessible and full public access.
Spot C is private property and the airport security and police do regular patrols and you are likely to get moved on. However, the road that runs over the 2 bridges at the eastern end provide similar (or better?) views and are public areas.
You can access the dock edge at the University of East London campus (Cyprus DLR) and the public path runs from abeam the runway turning circle all the way east past abeam of the end of the runway and then the road bridge that crosses the docks gives a more elevated view or under approach shots.
The northern dock edge is being developed so in time the entire length will be public realm - a few years off but something to keep an eye on as more will become accessible in stages.
Hope this helps.

Re: London City photography locations
being a bit pedantic, the spot A itself is behind the terminal building so the view isnt very good but walk eastwards along the covered walkway (underneath , not on top) and into the long term car park and the views are excellent with sun behind you for most of the day. I have parked in the long term car park but it is now £20 for 4 hours, the minimum time so not very cheap I'm afraid but on a cold day I think it's worth it. It's a simple walk from the DLR though. The security people seem quite happy with you being there taking photos and sometimes stop for a chat so doesnt seem to be any issue there. These pics were taken there back in March this year: http://www.civilianaviation.co.uk/forum ... 69&t=17555 and http://www.civilianaviation.co.uk/forum ... 69&t=17543
I also used point C and the Met Police turned up and had a chat for a while, and their main interest was my air band radio - did it transmit and was it legal. My response no it didn't transmit and yes it's okay to use as long as the info received is not used for any illegal purpose and that satisfied them. They chatted a bit about the local area and THIS IS IMPORTANT said that there had been one or two personal thefts (muggings?) where i was located hich alarmed me somewhat as I had about £2k's worth of camera equipment round my neck! That is the biggest down side if it's true and as it's quite quiet and out of view I don't doubt that it is. they did say that i might get the airport police calling in as I was under the flight path.
AC's comment re the 2 bridges is probably worth noting and might be a safer option unless you are at point C when there are lots of people with you! I've seen pics from the bridge and it certainly gives some good angles.
i've yet to try the north side but looks nice for evening shots and no pylons and wires in the background which I always find a pain to aviod from the south side.

Re: London City photography locations
I did mean Spot B .. sorry.
As it is on the North side it is good for photos
The only issue I have had on Spot B was two kids aged about 8 or 9 on bike who asked me for cigarettes and when I told then not I was to told to go forth and multiply you overweight female genital organ.
Needless to say I ensured camera, bag and stuff was next or in front of me while they were around lol.
Sorry about saying it was Spot A ...

Re: London City photography locations
We found spot B pleasant enough, with no trouble. It helped there were others about too. That was a few years ago now and we used the steps of the office block to get better shots of a/c on the ground - does anyone know if that's still possible please? I believe the building is now occupied, so maybe it isn't.
Re: London City photography locations
I was at Spot B (Royal Albert) on the 28th August 2014 with my daughter and it was completely ok. No kids (apart from the family having a picnic) a couple of other spotters/photographers and the office workers who just ignore you lol

Re: London City photography locations
I was there yesterday.
There is a lot of construction going on now, and views from the LT car park are somewhat limited.
However, if you go up to the bridge on Bargehouse Road, the view is pretty good.
Lots of people going past, (chatted to a few).
No problem.
Not sure about parking in the area, as I don’t drive.
Got DLR to King George V and walked from there.
