Police Helicopter

Post by robin » Fri Aug 23, 2013 5:18 pm

When is the Devon and Cornwall Police Helicopter, planning to move into Exeter Airport.

I understood it was suppose to arrive by the 1st July, to be joined and live with the local Air Ambulance.

Comments most welcome, even if it is via pm

Many thanks

There appears to be a lot of politics's involved in this issue.

The NPAS (National Police Air Service), who now own this helicopter, wanted to move it from its base at the police HQ, Exeter, less than two miles up the road, to have total control over their new asset (the ex Devon police helo). However it would seem that the new PCC (Police Crime Commissioners & other interested parties) possible still like to have some control over this helo. Coupled with this the land in question possible being sold for housing, and a few other issue thrown in, makes this whole subject of the ex Devon & Cornwall Police Helo, moving to Exeter Airport and interesting issue....

In fact the whole issue of the NPAS is full of politics, for example Alex Salmon 1st Scottish Minister said NO, to being part of the NPAS, likewise Northern Ireland followed suite, and Wales is also in the situation of not wanting to fully take part in what they see as an English Police Service.

Many other issue here exist even in England regard the NPAS control over a national asset, rather than a local asset. Even when most of the money now comes from central government, saving local tax payers large sums of money funding their local police force helicopter......

Whilst the new hangar and offices for the Police and Air Ambulance helicopters at Exeter Airport were completed some time ago they are still not in use. I'm told that there may be a problem with a potential legal challenge from the occupants of the hangar next door. There are a number of light aircraft based in that hangar and they are often parked outside. I'm told that there are concerns about those aircraft being blown over during helicopter operations.
I've not had any first-hand information so please treat this with the caution it deserves.

I understood that the reason for the move was so that Devon & Cornwall Constabulary would retain ownership over the land that the current Middlemoor helipad is on rather than have it nabbed by NPAS. The cost of the new site at Exeter Airport being borne by the D&C Police Authority (as it was at the time) rather than NPAS.

..... and a visit to Exeter this afternoon reveals a wall/fence being built between the Police/Ambulance landing pad and the adjacent light aircraft hangar. There is also a "Devon Air Ambulance Trust" sign on the hangar which wasn't there earlier in the week. Things are moving at long last.
