Re: Canon 50d
They are excellent cameras. In fact all the "10 series" cameras are, with the exception of the 40D, which seems to have more than its fair share of shutter failures. You should find that the 50D handles a lot better than the 600D - it's a bit larger and therefore has room for a second LCD screen and better controls. The ISO increments should be user selectable to either 1/3 or 1/2 of a stop.

Re: Canon 50d
As an alternative approach why not look for a second 600D as then you will have common batteries. The are usually several 2nd hand ones about.
I did similar with my 70D when I bought the 80D and it's so much easier when holidaying to just take 1 set of spare batteries and one charger. Also easier for show s etc.
I have a 600D which is a good camera and that is now on loan to a friend. I'm not sure if the later models use the same batteries but if there is another that takes the same then consider that too.

Re: Canon 50d
I think the 50D has quite an early implementation of auto ISO, and in M the ISO is fixed at ISO400 when auto ISO is selected. On later models the ISO would change automatically in M but there was no way to set exposure compensation, and then in the most recent models exposure compensation can be set too. I suspect this is because it could cause confusion (especially in M mode), so Canon introduced the functionality in steps. The issue being that auto ISO doesn't really fit with the old film scenario of only being able to adjust shutter speed and aperture - auto ISO wasn't an option because obviously it required a change of film! - meaning the controls and display indications aren't really up to allowing fully flexible auto ISO and exposure compensation. The new Fv (Flexible value) mode and revised quick control dial on the EOS R attempts to address this.
ISO1600 sounds about right as the default maximum ISO. You will probably find in the custom functions that you can set "ISO Expansion" to increase this by a stop or two (i.e. to 3200 or 6400).
