hi guys i'm going to purchase my first dslr today and was wondering how much difference there is between the 550 and 600 as on paper the 550 looks like it stand up to the 600,also wondering how much shutter lag there is between the two whilst shooting in raw,as for a lens i'm going to choose the 55-250 is stm over the canon EF 70-300 IS USM As I've noticed you get a small black demarcation lines in hight contrast shots.i've noticed it in shots of ba planes ,where's the 55-250 produces very little demarcation lines

The 600 was the replacement for the 550, so it will be improved in various areas. Therefore I would recommend the 600 if it is within your budget.

There's no perceptible shutter lag on any Canon (or Nikon) DSLR that I've used, so this should not be an issue.

Of those two lenses I would recommend the 70-300 IS USM for aircraft photography - the extra reach will be invaluable. I know a couple of people who have one and are very happy with it, one of whom produces superb photographs with it. I've no idea what you mean by demarcation lines - it's not a photographic term I have heard of before.

Mike, the 600D is a good decision - what have you been using until now?

a canon powershot sx50hs bridge camera
I was so sick of chromatic aberration in my pics that I now shoot in raw with my powershot but the shutter lag is a killer, hence the switch to a dslr
I've now purchased a 600D +EF-S 55-250 IS STM AS the ef70-300 IS USM Was a touch out of my budget but I least I finally have a start!

evaluative should be fine Mike but try AI servo for focussing if you're after moving aircraft. You should have hours/days of fun with it.

I've had my 600D since 2012 and it's still going strong and gives excellent results. I look forward to seeing some results

Thanks Andy
I now have set to AI Servo although it's a bit weird as there is no reassuring focus lock noise of AF Point lights just a green light in the bottom right corner on the viewfinder
