Thanks Gary, looks like it is the Olympic one after all. Certainly the correct position. Must have been the way the light was catching it, I didn't know of any others there.

doesn't that Tristar look lovely! So pleased some have been spared from the scrapman

She does look well, sadly though I very much doubt any have been saved from the scrapman. The US reg will be a change of ownership and they may use it for one last flight to the breakers, or even be broken up here All six here have been allocated US registrations.

The Dominies at Kemble are US registered but going nowhere. They are a special version anyway...HS.125 Srs.2 with limited spares use for the civil Srs.1 and Srs.3 which are out of service anyway.

I just don't see a market for any TriStars and in addition these are miltary modified.

I guess it's the engines and a few other bits to keep the very small fleet of survivors flying.

I think the best we can hope for is they may donate enough to return a grounded civil example to flying.

I always liked the TriStar. There were quite a few around, then suddenly, it seemed they were gone. LHR used to get many more TriStars than DC 10 at one time.

I still think of it as a new aeroplane having grown up looking at artists impression of the propsed new Lockheed L-1011

The Company that has acquired the Tristars are looking at converting them to waterbombers similar to the Dc10 & B747 in use in the US for this role.

As you say, the Dominie was not a HS125.

My understanding is that the interior is still set up as a WSO Trainer, not as an Exec Jet.

The RAF ALSO had HS125, which were Exec/CASEVAC.

Interesting about the TriStar, but what about the engines, that was supposedly the reason the type is almost dead, lack of spares for those particular engines?? :???:

My understanding is that the Tristar issue relates to the RR RB211 engines.

The L1011-1, l1011-100 and L1011-150 had the RB211-22B, which RR no longer support.

The L1011-200, L1011-250 and L1011-500 had the RB211-524 which RR do still support.

Therefore the ex RAF aircraft are OK.

Ah..right...thanks

yes it was lack of support now for the actual type, but I didn't realise it was not applicable for all

As tabkers they won't need to do the same amount of hours as airliners so hopfully they will get a new lease of life.

Originally Pan Am or BA and then RAF they will have been looked after in top fashion from new :)

Pity to just throw them away.

acording to the CX news that I quoted on page 1 of this topic that is the last one that is due to come to Bruntingthorpe. I doubt there's room for any more at present unless the contractors are busily breaking them (or others). The earlier ones were still sustantially in one piece at the beginning of August. I was told then that the pans were pretty full.

As opposed to just being allocated an N-reg, ZD950 has now had her Royal Air Force titles, roundels, flashes and serial removed, and now wears US registration N405CS. My understanding is that they WILL be departing, one at a time, maybe a month or so apart, as the new owners only have one L1011 crew and have to transfer some kit between each aircraft before they go
