Heathrow 08-08-2018, goings and comings (pic heavy)

Post by andygolfer » Sat Aug 11, 2018 8:56 am

I spent 10 hours at Heathrow on Wednesday trying out my 80D in earnest and intense practice, I was reasonably happy with the results but a few errors crept in.
I started off on the Colne Valley Way at Staines Moor taking departure shots after some bankers, sharing the field with a very inquisitve horse - you've probably heard the expression 'I could eat a horse' well this horse tried to eat my lunch! - I wonder what an onion bhajee would have done for it's digestion? Anyway I got some bankers but the heat and other haze got worse as the day progressed but I stuck it out to get a pic of the QF B.787 (shame it wasn't the special scheme one) around 13.45 then set off to Chester Road followed by the cemetery at 3pm for arrivals until my neighbour arrived from Hong Kong on CX235, quite a long day!

a few from Staines Moor:

framed this one a bit better, this was the flight I was waiting for to meet my neighbour - she can't understand my generosity in wanting to go all the way to Heathrow to give her a lift! (I didn't say I had been there 10 hours :D )

Some fabulous banking shots there Andy - your perseverance in looking for good locations around the reservoirs certainly paid off.

thanks Nick and Wallie.

Nick - I've spent ages studying maps and departure routes to try and identify good locations (and asked around a bit too!). I think I have good places for every possible scenario now but just need the time to get there more often - hopefully my neighbour will have to go to LHR again before too long!

Wallie - hope you make it again before the year's end, the light will be better in a couple of months as well, the light in the three hours or so round the middle of the day are too harsh for decent pics really (plus the heat haze). I like late September through October until the clocks change and March after the clock change until mid May-ish. Enjoyit when you do get there.

Looks like the 80D performed well.

Thanks - yes for a first day out I was quite pleased with the results. I found a few small things that caused me problems:
The adjustment wheel above the shutter button seems very light and I inadvertently changes my settings a few times (I was working in TV and at one point realised I was taking at 1/8000th of a second! - results were a bit dark but quite sharp).
I also caught the ISO button a couple of times so again settings were all out until I realised. I think that may have been because I was using BBF (back button focussing) and was catching the button as I wrapped my hand over the camera body.
I have been using BBF quite a lot but after this day out I've decided to abandon it. Nick (porkscratching) and I had a long e-conversation about it and he convinced me that the benefits are so limited that it causes more problems than it solves - it certainly introduced some camera shake at times as he suggested and gave me a very sore thumb by the end of the day (I suffer with a bit of arthiritis in my right hand around the top of my thumb anyway and that got a lot worse), so all the BBF buttons settings are now cancelled back to the defaults. The sigma 150-600 C is a bit heavy and I've thought for a while that I was introducing shake because of the balance so i'll see what happens next time I'm out (Tuesday a.m. with Nick coincidentally) and take it from there. - Watch this space!

Absolutely cracking shots Andy!

Excellent quality, those banking shots are top notch, but those landing ones are great too, love the Asiana A350 shot.

Jealous of the specials too, but that MD-82 :o!

Still can't quite get used to that Canada 737
