a FREEZING Amsterdam Schiphol 24-02-2018

Post by james143611 » Tue Feb 27, 2018 1:03 am

Spent the weekend at Schiphol for the Aviation fair on the Sunday. Took the early morning KLM flight on Saturday from Bristol to Amsterdam on PH-EZZ. Then spent the day spotting/photting at Schiphol. Spent the first half on the viewing deck until about 1500, then went to check in at the Ibis, warmed up for a bit then went to viewing area by McDonalds as 09 was being used for takeoff's.

it was absolutely freezing! 17kt winds did not help at all, at times it was so blowly it was very hard to keep the camera still. So I hope you like these shots!

Here are some from the viewing deck (the first one is on the apron). I shall post the others from runway 09 on this thread soon.

I prefer the first set to the second James, mainly because of the angles - I'm not a great fan of 'belly' shots and some of the second batch are too much from below for me but that just a personal thing.

If I have to pick a favourite it's the head on KLM 747 with the A.330 (or is it T7, hard to tell) behind it, a well taken opportunity for a good combination in one photo.

I have to admire you for staying out in the cold that long, I think by the time I got to the hotel it would have taken something really special to drag me out in the cold again but I suppose you had traveled a long way to be there.

thanks for taking the time to post them

Thank you for you input Andy, most appreciated

I should know shouldn't I as I took the shot, but I'm not 100% sure what is behind the 747, it looks slanted like a A330 but I'm going to say 777 because of the big engine :???:

Problem with 09 take offs is that they are high at that point, I agree, I have taken shots on the summers morning before and you can get some nice rotation angles, but when facing the sun you are stuck with underneath or backside shots. I must admit I took a few of those as I thought it would be handy as reference shot's for my 1/144 model kits

I don't know how I managed to even last up to that Aeroflot take off to be honest, by then I had watery eyes! It was then I had a look on FR24, and if anything regular was taking off I'd call it a day, so I did and thawed out in McDonalds, which was just as well as stuff stopped using 09 (probably a time restriction kicked in).

If it wasn't so cold I'd have probably gone over to the biz jet park for a shot of the Embraer E190-E2 PR-ZGQ (Prototype #4) that was parked there, went for this record shot (which is massively cropped!!) instead

I'll get some uploaded from the Sunday from the Van der Valk Schiphol hotel

That looks like an E-Jet E-2 prototype. The engines have much bigger fans than on the original E-Jets, which may be what's causing the confusion. You can see the large diameter engines and the same colour scheme on this shot I took at Farnborough in 2016:

Confusion? It was indeed an E2, as I mentioned above my picture:

It's defintely a B777, and I think you'll find it's PH-BVC (777-306ER) :)

Apologies, I clearly didn't read your post correctly, and I mixed up the shot of the E2 with the discussion about the A330/777.
