Heathrow 19-09-2017

Post by andygolfer » Wed Sep 20, 2017 8:20 pm

I spent my first full day at Heathrow since February 2015 yesterday trying to fill gaps in my photo collection, lots of new schemes and even some new
types. I spent the morning up until the 3pm change round at Stanwell Moor aiming to get some banking departures, I did quite well but the cloud closed in around midday and it was far from ideal for photography but I stuck it out and then moved to the dead centre of Hounslow for the afternoon / evening arrivals when the weather got far better.

these are in time order to make it easier for me, starting with the departures (from about 09.45 onwards), see this post for a bit about the location: http://www.civilianaviation.co.uk/forum ... 36&t=28976

this was one i had really hoped to get pics of - weather was kind for it's departure

I really like Qantas bankers ( http://www.civilianaviation.co.uk/forum ... 12&t=27169 ) but I don't think this one will win anything, the cloud cover was 100% by the time this went

then it was off to Hounslow for the evening arrivals and far better weather. One of my targets was the Thai A.350 and the light just held for it, the Ethiopian A.350 arrived a few minutes later but by then it was too dark.

I thought I was in Dreamliner land, - lots of 787s!

another that scheme and type that was on my list, now i need to return on a day when the 380 operates...

ImageOE-LBP A.320 Austrian Airlines Heathrow 19-09-2017 6291 by Andrew Goldsmith, on Flickr

and the last one on my quarry list for the day, ISO 1600 and a +2 aperture compensation just about made it useable
ImageHS-THC A.350 Thai International Heathrow 19-09-2017 6377 by Andrew Goldsmith, on Flickr

and very last pic of the day - the sun goes down on another enjoyable day at Heathrow, that corner of an out of focus sign or post in the foreground spoils it a bit but at F 5.6 I was never going to get much depth of field

HaHa ! Yes looked at your day ... All superb ! Sky from blue to yellow ... long day ? If I had to pick one ... my favourite would be the landing BA A380 ... Just look at all of those wheels ...

Keith ;)

Lovely dynamic shots, as we've come to expect from you and your explorations Andy. Your comment in the PoTM competition thread about the lighting of the GFA A330 is interesting (being lit by reflections from the reservoir). It's certainly a striking image.

It is unusual and I could only think of it being that unless it was reflection off cloud, it's quite odd when I look at the sequence of photos that I took of it, in the initial climb it was very dark underneath and with a cloudy background, it then came into sun albeit with areas of light almost transparent haze/cloud but still with the lower sides and underneath shadowed then suddenly the underside was brightly lit in the last 3 shots, the final one was even brighter than the one I used ( it also suffered from a bit of cloud haze which spoilt it  ) there was a lot of that haze about and I had lots of unusable shots because of it.
What ever caused the lighting from below certainly caused a striking effect (probably helped a bit more by the scheme as well) and I was probably a bit fortunate to catch it happening like that.

Very nice mix there Andy!!

I must admit I had to check it actually said Heathrow not Stansted :P

Seriously though, I love the afternoon shot's, especially the Eithad A380 and Thai 350 (didn't realise they went to LHR now!) but as mentioned, that BA 380 is stunning!

Also jealous of the Austrian Retro and One World AA, yet to see either of these!

thanks James (and everyone else) for the comments. I believe the Thai 350s only started last Monday so this was the 2nd one to visit.
