Sunny Rayne 22-11-2015

Post by andygolfer » Mon Nov 23, 2015 7:34 pm

A nice morning walk in the winter sunshine yesterday across the fields to the local airstrip where it was quite busy, I was experimenting with a Canon 50mm F1.8 lens which I have borrowed to try out.

G-OTOP departed for a trip to old Warden along with G-CEXM (in the photo above), a nice day for flying but a mit cold in the QuikR - they had warm flying suits on though.

A Canon 50:1.8 is a very sharp, inexpensive lens

folk do not always appreciate this....

I tried a few at f1.8 indoors yesterday with no flash and they were very sharp. Need to brush up my technique for focussing a bit though, must have missed the focal point once or twice as they were out of focus due to very short depth of field - PICNIC I believe (Problem In Chair, Not In Camera :D )

I will be ordering one shortly.

Would suggest checking out the newer EF 50mm F1.8 STM lens as there are currently two models available. This version is at the price the EF 50mm Mk II was at only a while back but by all accounts is reckoned on being superior with metal lens mount and 7 rounded aperture blades compared to 5 non on the 50mm Mk II. Out of focus is supposed to be much smoother.

Nice shots Andy.

One thing I noticed about the 50mm f1.8 was that it makes you think about the composition of the shot a lot more, and take your time over it.

It is also a very easy lens to blur shots with - as well as being sharp when you get it right!! I would advise that if the light allows to drop it down to f2.8 or 3.5 at times - I find it easier to use at those apertures.

The newer STM version of the lens, with the metal mount, as mentioned above is on HDEW for £85 at the moment... http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/canon-ef-5 ... 3517-p.asp
