Berlin Tegel variety - Friday 7th September 2018

Post by james143611 » Thu Sep 20, 2018 12:54 am

Hello all,

Had one of my rare week holidays where I spent more time in a city than at the airport so had one day allocated to plane spotting (Yes there have been times where I've done an airport but never seen the city! Frankfurt and Zurich comes to mind).

The flight and hotel was interesting. We left Bristol Airport late as the plane we was booked for had gone tech (Bristol based OE reg 320), so we had to wait for a replacement to turn up which was Gatwick based G-EZWS that got transferred empty to Bristol and covered the diagram and then returned to Gatwick.

I stayed at the Meininger Hotel at Schoenefeld, which is situated to the East of the airport on the flightpath. Even more handy was the roof terrace which was used pretty much every evening more for serial logging (facing the sun for photo's) but traffic isn't terribly exiting, Rossiya and UP was worth seeing though.

Getting to Tegel was about an hour or so on public transport, mostly because unlike Shoenefeld it isn't linked by rail. I planned to go to Tegel on the Wednesday for the Scoot 787, which meant getting up at early for the 0740 train to get to the airport by 0845 ready for the viewing deck to open, and get the Scoot departing before 10am. However I managed to wake up late and would be pushing to get there in time so decided to go on Friday instead (On a weekday, Scoot operates Monday, Wednesday, Friday)

Weather wasn't going to be as good on Friday but it wasn't bad, bonus was the Scoot was running late and was expected to arrive at 09:40 (near the time it was due out!) so would get to see it arrive and depart. I was also intrigued to find out what the Skywest flight was. In the FR24 departures list, it had a Skywest Airlines logo for a flight to Heraklion, clicked on it to find out it was apparently a 737 operated by Virgin Australia Regional! When it arrived, it turned out to be Corendon Europe 737 9H-TJA :(

So after using the S-Bahn I got the TXL bus to the airport, which was single deck bendy buses wedged with passengers, clearly not cut out for airport work, could have done with double deck buses!

Paid the 3 euro's and passed through security, and went up to the viewing deck, which was very good, goes round in a circle giving an almost 360 degree view.

Took tonnes of photo's so this is a Part 1 of the set I've got through so far:

very nice James , and a very varied selection.
nice to see some 146's still active - they are becoming rare in the air now. I noticed the Qatari 747 and A.340 in the background, I assume that is a v.i.p. area.

An interesting selection, and great you managed to catch the Scoot. Looks like an excellent viewing deck - with aircraft parking and taxiing nearby, and the runway not too far away either.

Thanks guys :thumb:

Very much and excellent viewing deck, facing north, and can move around for different photo angles. Only had a 70-300 lens which was more that suitable for runway shots. If you need the toilet or a drink you have to go out and back through the security check. There were ashtrays on the deck though so if you smoke you don't have to keep going out and back in all the time.

Andy - The Government area, saw many black cars and sheikh's about. Forgot to mention that actually after all Friday was the better day to go as they departed, if I went on Wednesday I would have just seen them parked up (the 747 was seen parked on Wednesday from the Berlin TV Tower). I'll post pictures of them as I go through the rest in the next set.

Was surprised at the variety that I assume have taken the Air Berlin slots, first visit for me so not been there to see the home fleet as it was.
