Andy, try the latest version of EOS Utility (and the other applications while you're at it). Go to http://www.canon.co.uk, click on products > DSLR > support > software, find your model and follow the download links.

Alternatively, take control and use a card reader, which is what I prefer.

Thanks Nick, I suppose i can just put the card in the PC but the utility is fairly straight forward. I've got the disk for the 70D so will try reloading it or if that fails wil luse your link thanks. Just annoying that they manage to muck it up without even trying!

Well that didn't take long, it took an absolute age. I tried Nick's suggestions but still it wouldn't open, I even re-installed it first before taking the Canon downloads but it was still as stubborn mule with it's feet stuck in concrete. I noticed that all the canon software had upload dates of 20-12-2017 when I had the massive Windows 10 update so don't know if windows did that without asking or not, seems to much of a coincidence to be anything else.

Eventually I did some searching on the canon advice centre and found a suggestion to turn the AVG antivirus off as this has been known to conflict with the Canon software so I tried that. BINGO! it opened immediately, only trouble was I turned the AVG back on and it jammed it again.

read on a bit more I thought and found that you need to set an exception in the AVG programme for the file/folder with te utility in it, did that and now it's all fine. What a pain though?

Thanks to Nick for his help, he's usually right but on this occasion it was an absolute sod to track down but got there in the end. Back to the foaming dishwasher now - about 10 cycles today and it's still foaming like the mouth of a randy bull with mad cow disease
